Notes |
- This was a puzzle for me for a number of years. I worked on the New York Drollingers for a long time without making the Atlantic bridge. There were several in the civil war but none had descendants. I coresponded with a woman in CA that was down from John Henry "Rosie" that had found that same census entry. When I went to Germany in 2000 I got to finally go to the church in Dietlingen where I looked for Thomas. Since I didn't find him there and the census entry read Bavaria I thought he was part of Eugen Drollinger the architect's line (did work for Ludwig on his castles). He had a pension file from the civil war but no children listed. One of his children, Gustave, had a Theobald listed as the father in the census. It was the birth/baptism of his daughter, Elise, that gave me the final clue as it listed her father as Tobias. So yes, Thomas, Theobald and Tobias are the same person. My thinking is the census taker garbled the name when he wrote it down. Which may cause a lot of unnessary confusion on future researchers.
It was an awe inspiring moment when I held the Dietlingen Church book in my hands and looking at the begining date realized I was holding a four hundred year old book. I was not able to examine this book in 1982 to 1985 due to illness of the Pastor.
