Sharpe Road, Burlington, died at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 24, 2009, at the Alamance Regional Medical Center after two years of failing health.
Born in Alamance County, he was retired from Barnhill Construction Company. An avid UNC fan, Earle never met a stranger and loved E.M. Holt Elementary School and its teachers. He was of the Baptist faith and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Trollinger Sutphen, of the home; daughters, Lou Ellen Sutphen, of Flushing, N.Y., Julie Lex, of Springhill, Fla.; stepdaughter, Cynthia Holyfield, of Burlington; sister, Beverly S. Newman and husband, Bo, of Kittrell; brother, George R. Sutphen and wife, Jean, of Raleigh; and four grandchildren, Hannah Hassaanein, of the home, and Joshua Nicholson, of Efland, who were Earle's pride and joy as they have lived with and were raised by he and Mary for most of their lives, and Amber Lex and Nicholas Lex, of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earle Buckley Sutphen Sr. and Nellie Lucas Sutphen, and a brother, Robert Lucas Sutphen.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham with Pastor Chuck Sharpe officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence at other times.

Finley Leads Junior Highs To 26 - 7 Win GIBSONVILLE Tommy Fin - ley had a field day in leading the Williams High junior high eleven to a 26 - 7 season - ending victory over Gibsonville's junior varsity here yesterday. Finley scored two touchdowns, passed for two more and kicked: both extra points to figure in all Burlington scoring.
