Notes - Tidbits of history.... The Roney House
Built in 1903 , the A.K. Roney house sits on the corner of what are now Wilkins St. and Roxboro Road. It was a present for Amos Kendall and Elizabeth Vincent Roney from their nephews, Ben and Buck Duke. The Dukes were frequent guests at the Roneys. A.K. and Lizzie's own two children died in 1892, and they adopted a son, George in 1895. In the early 1920's, A.K, received a large inheritance from the Duke estate, part of which he donated to Elon College. Lizzie died in 1924 and A.K. in 1926, and soon, thereafter George lost the house because of some debts. In the thirties, the house became the property of the county school board. It was used to house and train teachers and became known as the Teachery or Teacherage. Colleen Agnew lived there with Principal Barker and his wife when she came to town to teach. Mr and Mrs Horace Brannon and their children lived there from 1953 to 1956 while he was principal.
