  • Notes
    • How many wives he had is not know for certain as a lot of this is speculation based on bit and pieces from different sources. What is known is conflicting and confusing. He first shows up as Bomar Morrison in the 1860 census. He enlists in the Confederate Army as Bomar Trollinger. If he were the son of Hulda why doesn't he show up in the 1850 census? He could be the Armistead B. Trollinger transferred from Holcolm May 1, 1863 in exchange for Edmund Belcher, on muster roll for Oct 31, 1864 Company F 1st SC Infantry. Hosea and William Trollinger are also members of Company F. It is not certain if Hulda is his mother nor who his father is. So he is placed here as a probable son of Hulda and unknown father. GLD Dec 2012

Dave question: Who are Albert Bomar (Bomar Morrison) Trollinger's parents?
Gordon response: The only parent for certain is one Hulda Trollinger. Unfortunately the 1850 census listed the man as W. Trollinger. In 1860 she is residing with a James Morrison with Bomer age 14. And from there the trail runs cold. The only W. Trollinger around in that time frame is William b 1826 died 1880 married to a Nancy Jennings b 1835. Hulda may have been his mistress or common law wife and moved on but the evidence is not there. William also had a son Bomar b 1873.

Richard Hessler TROLLINGER, John M. My Ggrandfather, John Marcus Trollinger was born in Greenville, NC in 1865 ... although his younger and older siblings were born in Spartanburg Co. and his family lived in Spartanburg Co., SC from 1800 until sometime before the 1880 Census which found them just across the Georgia line in Franklin Co., GA in His father, Albert Bomar Trollinger lived in Spartanburg Co and is recorded as Bomar Trollinger (aged 14) in the 1860 Census as living with James & Hulda (Trollinger) Morrison. On his sister's death certificate, their mother's maiden name is shown as Trollinger. Sometime after 1860, he assumed the name Albert Bomar Trollinger which name he bore until his death after the 1900 Fulton Co., GA census. I theorize he did that for one of several reasons: 1) he was illegitmate and assumed his mother's name after leaving his stepfather's household; or 2) he ran afoul of the law and assumed her maiden name as an alias; or 3) he was not illegitimate, but used his mother's second or common-law husband's name temporarily to avoid reproach divorce, parentage, or abandonment. Any ideas or connections??? My basic problem is who was his father, what was his mother's maiden name, & who were his grandparents. I have a lot of circumstantial data, that with a leap of faith greater than I am presently prepared to make, that could suggest that his father was Bomar Trollinger (listed in the CW roster below) and his mother was Hulda (maiden name unknown) Trollinger Morrison. Further, Bomar, Sr. could have been either the son or grandson of Samuel Trollinger of Spartanburg Co., SC of whom other records (marriage, probate, etc. ) exist.

      UPDATE
Some of this I have reduced to writing, some is in document form, and some only oral.

      Major points include:

      A. 1870 Haywood Co., NC census where James & Hulda Morrison moved from Spartanburg Co., SC and before Hulda Morrison turned up in 1880 Franklin Co., GA. At that time Bomer had only one child William Trollinger born in SC in 1867 and his wife's name was Julia. His second son Albert Bomer Trollinger was born in NC in 1870. Third child Nannie Talullah Trollinger born in SC in 1871 & fourth child Hosea Trollinger born in 1872 in SC. Haywood Co., NC includes part of the Cherokee Indian Reservation, aka Qualla Boundary centered around town of Cherokee, NC. This may be the nexus of the Indian princess stories and could have some basis in fact.

      B. 1880 Franklin Co., GA census where widower Boman Trollinger lived with no children in his household (he was servant in someone else's household)

      C. Bomer in 1880 Franklin Co., GA had moved near his mother Hulda Morrison who had his four children in her care.

      D. Being widowed and not one to be idle, Bomer located a second wife Alice Payne and had three children out-of-wedlock with her. She lived down the pike a piece with her mother and her three children by Bomer.

This data is taken from SC in CW on CD for roster of 1st SC. Landrum does not mention the above, but lists an Edward Belcher of Co. B of the Legion. I believe Edmond (b. 1838) is the son of Josiah Belcher and Scarberry Bishop (my ggg grandparents). Listed on the 1870 Census for Spartanburg as living in the Cherokee Township and age 31 (b. 1839) He was in the same company with his cousin, William L. Belcher (b. Aug. 18, 1849). On Broadfoot and Muster roll for both units . Ist Inf (box 381, extraction 2, record 3420). For the Holcombe Legion the entry states E. Belcher, "Cavalry Battalion Infantry Regiment Holcombe Legion" (box 381, extraction 2 and record 3418.

      F. 1900 Census -Fulton Co., GA lived at 91 Rhodes St, Atlanta 1900 census records state of birth as GA. Living with his third wife Mary Elizabeth Brannon and his third brood of children in Atlanta, GA.

      G. 1850 Spartanburg Co., SC census: I would argue that W. Trollinger and H. Trollinger were NOT husband and wife and that census enumerator correctly recorded sex for each of them as "F". My primary rationale is that, although Hulda was living with Mr. James Morrison in 1860 as his wife and although Bomer was using surname Morrison in 1850, a) James Morrison and "Miss" Hulda Trollinger went to the bother of having a legal marriage recorded in 1865, and b) Bomer lived in James & Hulda Morrison household in 1870 Haywood Co., NC census as Bomer Trollinger (along with his wife Julia MNU Trollinger) and Bomer used the Trollinger surname forever after. I believe Albert Bomer Trollinger was born out of wedlock to Emiline Mahulda Trollinger and an unknown father. Further, I believe H. Trollinger, Hulda Trollinger, Hulda Morrison, Emiline Mahulda Morrison are all the same person based on age, location, household, and familial relationships recorded in the census records.

      H. RECENT UPDATE: through ancestry.com DNA testing, three unknown DNA ancestors popped up, two of the three in Spartanburg Co., SC: James H. Ezell (my DNA matches DNA from 8 of his 11 recorded family tree descendant per ancestry.com) born October 1819 in Spartanburg Co., SC died 30 Dec 1900 Cherokee Co., SC on 27 Nov 1840 married his wife Artimissa Scruggs Dobbins(my DNA matches DNA from 7 of her 11 recorded family tree descendant per ancestry.com) in Spartanburg Co., SC. She was born 5 Jan 1818 in Spartanburg Co., SC and died 23 Apr 1892 in Spartanburg Co., SC. If I am the descendant of these two people, the only unidentified person in that date range in my lineage would be Albert Bomer Trollinger's first wife. My late grand-aunt Louise told me her father (my GGF's) mother's name was Destiny and was an Indian. The 1870 Haywood Co., NC census shows Albert Bomer Trollinger's first wife was named Julia. James & Artimiss Ezell have several children listed in family trees, none named Julia or Destiny, but there are some gappy chronological periods from which one or more children could easily be missing. I will search further for someone named Julie Ezell in Spartanburg Co., SC, but had had no success so far, but that is my best guess and why for this missing link.

      V. Old email from Richard Hessler to Gordon Drollinger: I, too, have a copy of the Bishop family Bible you mention. Henry Jefferson Bishop was married to Eliza L. Self (she was previously married to a Mr. Williams). "Mrs." Julia Ann Trollinger was a neighbor/domestic who provided care services to Eliza in her old age. After Eliza died, her son, B.F. Williams (by Eliza's first marriage)gave Julia Ann Trollinger land for services rendered to Eliza before she died. Very shortly thereafter, Julia Ann Trollinger married Eliza's widowed husband H.J. Bishop. Of the three Trollinger children listed, one was my great-grandfather, John Marcus Trollinger. His grandmother was Hulda Trollinger, not Julia Ann Trollinger. His mother's name is believed to be Destiny (???), reputedly an Indian from the nearby Catawba Reservation, but no doubt you've heard that Indian princess story before. I guess "Mrs Julia Ann was the children's mother, maybe their aunt, but must have been someone close to the children. Otherwise why the entry in Mrs. Julia Ann Trollinger husband's Family Bible? Maybe another wife of Albert Bomer Trollinger, but do not know for sure. What I haven't reviewed or found yet are the extant (and available) microfilmed church minutes from the church of the elder, deeds abstracted for the property they owned for which there is/are no deeds of later conveyance, any death certificates that may be available for descendants who died in GA, any Michael or Samuel Trollinger wills filed in NC, or descendant wills filed in GA.

      BUCK CREEK BAPTIST CEMETERY
      Spartanburg County, SC
      By W. D. Floyd

This cemetery is located south of Chesnee, SC. It can be reached by going south on US 221 about a half mile past the Chesnee High School and taking Ezell Road to the right just a little ways past the big cemetery on the left. There is a sign that points the way for Buck Creek Baptist church. After about 1.5 to 2 miles the road suddenly Makes a hard left turn with the road that goes straight ahead being a dead end road. The cemetery will be on the left at the next intersection. I was there January 5, 1998 and I started in the southwest corner of the cemetery.

Finally, this leaves two remaining puzzlers:

      1. Who were the parents of Emiline Mahulda Trollinger? My best guess is that her mother was Ellen Trollinger. I do not know whether Ellen was a Trollinger or a Trollinger wife. There are five other contemporary Trollinger women of that age: Elizabeth, Jane, Barbara, Emily, and Christina and I cannot determine which were Trollinger daughters and which were Trollinger wives. However, from 1800 & 1810 Rockingham Co. NC census and 1820, 1830, & 1840 Spartanburg Co., census, there were few younger males listed and only one on the 1850 Spartanburg Co., SC census, Samuel Trollinger b. 1829 living in same household as old man Samuel Trollinger b. 1764 along with Barbara, Ellen, & Emily.

      2. Who were the parents of Ellen Trollinger? My best guess is Samuel Trollinger b. 1764, d. AFT 1850, m. 30 Jul 1793 Sarah Henderson Trollinger . b ABT 1773 and d. BTW 1830 & 1840.

Subject: Princess White Cloud Trollinger debunked

      Hi Beth,

Thank you for the pdf from the Trollinger cousin lady in Myrtle Beach, SC.

?I have had Samantha Jane Trollinger in my files for 15-20 years along with her parents, cousins, and how she connects to my line of descent. I pieced this together from reviewing ALL SC Trollinger census records from 1810 through 1920.?

I think I can help you to? unsnarl her story.

      First,

?Samantha Jane Trollinger is descended from a Bomar Trollinger who was descended from a William Trollinger, but I believe? Gracie Howell latched on to the wrong Bomar Trollinger, took a left turn, and ended up back in Haw River, NC several generations sooner than she should have. You can follow my line of ancestry for Samantha Jane Trollinger on the ancestor chart or the group sheets or the GEDCOM for her and all ancestors and descendants of those ancestors. Note: I have her in my records and knew she married a Mr. Keasler, but did not know his given name.

Second, the Princess White Cloud story I suspect from a now deceased researcher Mary Trollinger of Atlanta. She was born about 1920, I talked to her and gave her my records about 20-22 years ago in 1995-1997. The Indian princess story was told to me by my late half grand aunt Louise Trollinger Mitchell Miller between when I tracked her down in 1995 and her death in 2003. She heard that story from her father John Marcus Trollinger who was the son of Albert Bomar Trollinger who was married to the "Indian Princess". Aunt Louise said her name was Destiny and that her father said she had left her children with her husband and returned to live among her people. My guess is Mary Georgia Pittman Trollinger (wife of Raymond Edgar Trollinger) heard the story from her father-in-law Thomas Benjamin Trollinger who was a son from the THIRD marriage of Albert Bomar Trollinger.

All that is clear is that Albert Bomar Trollinger and his first wife had four children. They were not married in 1860, on 1870 Haywood Co., NC census his was listed as Julia Trollinger. On the 1880 census, Albert Bomar Trollinger and wife Julia Trollinger were no longer living together. He moved to Franklin Co., GA near where their four children lived with his mother Emmeline Mahulda Trollinger Morrison and near where his second or common law wife Mary Payne lived with her parents and their three children bearing the Payne surname, evidently born out of wedlock but all three of which later used the surname Trollinger, post marriage or just took their father's last name.

Meantime, back in Spartanburg Co., SC, Julia Ann Trollinger lived with the Bishop family and cared for elderly, invalid Mrs. Bishop who died in 1884, left land to Julia Ann Trollinger, via Mrs. Bishop's son by her first marriage. Julia Ann Trollinger then married the widower Mr. Henry Jefferson Bishop on 20 Feb 1885. Julia Ann Trollinger four children's names are recorded in the Bishop family bible.

Through my ancestry.com DNA test, I have identified two direct ancestors in Spartanburg Co., SC unknown to me prior to 2016: James H. Ezell and his wife Artimissa Scruggs Dobbins. I believe they are the parents of Julia Ann Trollinger. They had a daughter same age as Julia Ann of the nickname Nancy used for given name Ann who lived on the next farm over from the old patriarch Samuel Trollinger.

Further, my Native American DNA percentage is in the 0.0 to 1.0% range as is my mother's. There is none with my father's DNA. My mother's great grandmother Julia Ann (Ezell?) Trollinger Bishop was 1/8th of my mother's DNA. My mother has another putative Indian princess on her mother's side, but point is: 1/8th is 12.5% so whatever Native American DNA Julia Ann might have had could only have been very small to be diluted to less than 1.0% for my mother. DNA does not support Julia Ann being an Indian princess or any more than 1/16th herself to pass along at most 1.0% to my mother.

Finally, no telling why Albert Bomar and Julia Ann went their separate ways, but she stayed in Spartanburg Co., SC to whence they had returned from their brief residence in Haywood Co., NC from sometime after 1866 and sometime before 1871. It was Albert Bomar Trollinger and his mother Hulda Morrison who bugged out with the four children to Franklin Co., GA when the children were all rather young. What happened to pry four young children away from their mother to be placed with their paternal grandmother; who knows, but no doubt that there was some kind of major dust up.

Attached are photos of Albert Bomar Trollinger and Julia Ann Trollinger in the possession of my cousin Jerry Mitchell of Crandall, GA near Chatsworth whose mother was Louise Trollinger. Included are photos of other names in the story above.

I'd be happy to walk you through this over the phone one evening.

      Sincerely,

      Richard Hessler
