USS Spokane, a 6,000-ton Juneau class light cruiser built at Kearny, New Jersey, was commissioned in May 1946. Following a Caribbean shakedown, in October she crossed the Atlantic to begin a northern European cruise that lasted nearly through January 1947. Spokane spent the next nine months in the western Atlantic region, then deployed to northern European from November 1947 through February 1948. Her third overseas tour, this time to the Mediterranean Sea, took place between January and May 1949. She was formally reclassified as an anti-aircraft light cruiser (CLAA-120) in March of that year, though that term had been unofficially applied to ships of her type for some time previously. During mid-1949 Spokane was employed as a training ship. Later in the year, as part of the Truman administration's reductions in Navy force structure, she was ordered inactivated.
Even though she is claimed as Edward's daughter in his obituary, Charlotte Leigh nee Ishee is actually the daughter of Edward's wife, Ruth and her previous marriage.
