Notes |
- I was very young when my cousin Charles went back into the army. He got out 2 Jan 1946 and went back in 27 Jul 1948 according to the dates on his DD 214s (Report of Seperation from the Armed Forces of the United States). While out of the service he worked as a laborer for Oswald and Hess meat packers in Pittsburgh. My dad and I were visiting him at my grandmother's house on Hemphill street as he packed and he gave me 3 books of Randy Starr and the Air Circus. I never saw him after that but always had the idea of some day meeting up and exchanging stories of military life. It was a shock to me when I heard of his death. His life was one of those that are often on soap operas. The woman he married was one his father had been caught having sex with by his mother. The how and why of his marriage to her we was found recently. Needless to say this marriage alienated him from the rest of the family.
He joined the U.S. Army 17 Feb 1943, saw service in the European Theater of Operations. He remained in the Army as a career soldier for 28 years. He was a squad leader in C Company 17th Infantry Regiment during the Korean Conflict. He finished up his career as a helicopter repairman in C Troop 7th Bn 17th Cavalry, ETSing 31 May 1971. He died Oct 1987 and is buried in the National Cemetery Fort Bliss Texas. From my recollections he was in the 26th Inf Div at Christmas of 1944, this was a card with the division patch on the front. Since moving I have not been able to locate the card. The division had 4 campaign stars. Receipt of DD214s reveals the following WWII service. MM 1944 M1 rifle, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal, PFC, departure for France 27 Aug 1944, lapel button issued. Korean war service, UNSM, KSM, GCM 3rd award, NDSM, NDSM 1st OLC, Driver and Mechanic Badge, Aircrewman Badge, 4 Overseas Bars. Vietnam service, GCM 4th award, VCM, VSM.
