- I now believe that Charles could be the bastard son of William Holt Trollinger who is white and Hannah Trollinger who is enumerated as a black domestic servant of William (ref 1870 Census). They are all enumerated together in the 1870 Census. Charles is enumerated as a mulatto in this census. DHD 2012
Question: Who are the parents of Fred Lee Trollinger and Charles/Charlie Trollinger?
Here is what I think: I believe the mulatto Charles Trollinger enumerated in the 1870 Census is the same person as Charles C. "Charlie" Trollinger (b Jun 1867 NC) listed in my database. I also believe that he is the probable father of Fred Lee Trollinger. He would be about the right age to be his father and as you can see, Fred would have been born one year before his sister, Lillie N. Trollinger (b Sep 1893). Charlie was married to Saphronia Mebane. I believe she could be Fred's mother. She would have been 15 years old when he Fred was born.
Now, regarding Charles/Charlie's possible parents. I believe it's possible that Hannah Trollinger, age 18 (also enumerated in the same 1870 Census) could be the mother of Charles and that Charles' father could be William Trollinger, the husband to Isla. These Negroes were possibly William's slaves prior to the end of the Civil War and now work for him. I may be wrong regarding Hannah as the mother of Charles but I think I'm pretty close to the mark with William as his father. I haven't yet come across any death data for Charles/Charlie. If we had that perhaps it would shed more light on the subject.
Charles no doubt grew up along side of Elizabeth Octavia "Bessie" Trollinger who was about nine years older and she may have treated him well which could explain why his presumed son, Fred ended up naming his own daughter the same. Because Elizabeth Octavia "Bessie" Trollinger didn't die until well after Fred was born, Fred himself could also have known her as well and liked her as much as his presumed father did.
