Notes |
- Note: It is somewhat difficult to precisely determine Adolphus' true biological parentage due to a variety of conflicting documents involving him. His marriage record with Rachel Holt appears to be one of the most credible sources of his actual parentage. In that record he is a young man of about 22 years of age and he states that his father is Dan Holt and his mother is Laura Trolinger (Trollinger). The only Laura Trollinger who would plausibly fit as his mother would be Laura Trollinger, daughter of John Henry Trollinger and Martha Holt. Laura would have been about 15 years old when Adolphus was born in 1888. It was not until 1905 when Laura was about 32 years old that she and Rufus Boose were married and according to the 1910 Census, Laura states that it was her first marriage which serves as evidence that she and Dan were never married but apparently had a romantic relationship leading to the apparent out-of-wedlock birth of Adolphus. In the 1900 Census Laura and Dolphus were living with Laura's father and Dolphus is identified as the "son-in-law" of Laura's father which would appear to be a mistake as Dolphus would actually be his grandson. Then, in the 1910 Census, Dolphus was living with Laura and Rufus and he is correctly identified as the "son-in-law" of Rufus, implying that Dolphus was the son of Laura. Also in the 1910 Census Laura states that she is the mother of 1 child who is still living also serving as evidence that Dolphus was her son. In Dolphus' death certificate where his second wife, Annie was the informant, she correctly states that his mother was Laura Trollinger but incorrectly states his father was Henry Trollinger - who was actually his grandfather instead. Adding to the confusion, in Adolphus' marriage record with Annie, his father is identified as Henry Trollinger and his mother as Martha Trollinger where the preponderance of evidence seems to place them as his grandparents and not parents. For now, he will be placed herein as the son of Laura Trollinger and Dan Holt until and unless irrefutable evidence to the contrary becomes known.
In the 1940 Census, there are three females identified as the granddaughters of Adolphus. They are Ineta Trollinger age 7; Alice Faye Trollinger age 5 and Betty Lou Trollinger age 2. Also identified is a daughter named Beannie age 23. Out of all Adolphus' children, Beanie (Beannie) Trollinger seems to be the most logical mother of Ineta, Alice and Betty and because they all carry the Trollinger surname, it appears they were all born out of wedlock. It is unknown (as of 2024) what became of Beanie, Ineta, Alice and Betty.
