TUB HARVEY OUR FIRST HERO
Thursday Extra
The war has come close home to us in Radford.
"Tub" Harvey was killed in action in France, on August 22.
Word was received by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Harvey; this afternoon. Lieut. Alfred R. Harvey, 24 years old, was a V. P. I. boy, He was a member of Co. M, and served on the Border. He was active in training new men for the war against/ the Hun, then took the course in an officer's training school and as a lieutenant was attached to Co. F, 120th infantry.
Fred or "Tub" as he was more familiarly called was one of the boat of Radford's many fine boys who answered the call of their country. Clean-cut, upstanding, Very much of a gentleman, who never spoke to give hurt, he was the beau-ideal; soldier; happy, frank, kindly, a manly, spendid fellow, beloved by all.
His family have more than the sympathy of the community for all share in the sorrow that is theirs
They are two other sons in the service. Mack and Robert, and "Tub" was the youngest of these three.

Letters from his commanding officers concerning the death of Lieutenant Fred "Tub" Harvey have been received by his parents.
They speak splendidly of Fred, and reveal that he was shot through the head by a Boche sniper while on patrol duty. His body was reĀcovered with difficulty by the boys and was buried in the AmeriĀcan cemetery.
The letters will be read at the memorial services in the Colonial Theatre, announced elsewhere.
It is possible that the memorial services for "Tub" Harvey will be made the occasion for the starting; of a movement for a soldiers monument
.
The parents suggestion of asking the city to acquire the triangle at First, Arlington and Kent streets, and asking the public to subscribe for the monument.
