- Mr. Wayne Ronald Boyles, Jr. age 87 of Mount Airy husband of Mary Elizabeth (Lib) Trollinger Boyles passed away at Northern Hospital of Surry County, Skilled Care Unit Saturday, September 06, 2014. He was born in Surry County on December 22, 1926 to the late Wayne Ronald Boyles, Sr. and Felicia Norman Boyles. He was a 1944 graduate of Mount Airy High School and a 1950 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. His college years were interrupted by serving in the U.S. Navy for two years during WWII. Mr. Boyles taught 8th grade and coached basketball and baseball at White Plains School, 1950-1952. He was a merchant at Boyles Shoe Store until it closed in 1989. He had the opportunity to work for the Surry County Health Department for 14 years before retiring. In 1996 he received the Glaxo Wellcome Child Health Recognition Award. He was an active Jaycee and later a Kiwanian serving as Lieutenant Governor of Division 5 of the Carolina's District. An active member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy, he served in many capacities over the years. His love of sports included coaching and sponsoring summer ball leagues, officiating basketball games in the Blue Ridge Officials Association and supporting local high school sports throughout the area. He was honored by being inducted into the Ring of Honor in the "Surry County Sports Hall of Fame" and in receiving the Graniteer Award in the "Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame". Mr. Ronald Boyles is survived by his wife of 63 years; Mary Elizabeth (Lib) Trollinger Boyles of the home, his son Wayne R. Boyles III and wife Stephanie of Alexandria, VA; and daughter Mary Lindsay Boyles of Mount Airy; as well as his sister Felicia Boyles Beamon of Florida and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Peggy Trollinger of Lexington, NC and Robert and Brenda Sherrill of Georgia, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Two sisters predeceased him - Caroline Boyles Kirkman and Jennie Boyles Pender. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, September 9, 2014; at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church with Dr. Roger Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00pm in the Fireside Room of the church prior to the funeral service in the sanctuary.
