Maggie Madge Louella Preston's Many Names
Maggie (Madge Louella) Preston, Allison, Trollinger was my twice-married grandmother. At a fairly early age she married Clyde Bane Allison. And at middle-age she married a man 16 years her junior, H.L. Trollinger.
She had always told her sons and daughters that her given name was Madge Louella Preston. In honor of my grandmother, when I was born, my mother named me Betty Lou. I never liked my name, especially the "Lou" part, but I felt honored to carry on my grandmother's name and I hoped it had made her happy. I used to wonder why my grandmother's children, which included my mom and her brothers and sister, would call her "Maggie" when they wanted to "get her goat". And I remember that she would get so upset when anyone called her "Maggie". I always just thought it was a family joke that us kids didn't catch on to. I have her baptismal certificate which gives her name as Madge L. All of the newspaper obituaries regarding her death referred to her as Madge L.
Recently, my niece sent me a legal copy of my grandmother's birth certificate, which I will post. Her given name was "Maggie Preston". I was in shock. Turns out (my older sister said) Maggie never liked her name either, so she changed it to Madge Louella! And now I wonder; "Why didn't she change her name to something pretty???" Her middle name wasn't even "Louella", and I'm stuck with it for eternity anyway!!
I'm glad we were finally able to unravel the mystery about my grandmother's name. Thank you niece Allison.
P.S. Anybody notice the signature of the person who signed my grandmother's birth certificate?
Madge was also married to Clyde Bane Allison (1888-1962) at one time.
