Mary Belcher Workman, 95, of Chattanooga, TN died on Saturday, October 15, 2011 in Orangeburg, SC.
An early Tennessee Aviatrix, her life was not defined by her piloting ability but her soaring spirit was influenced by it.
The daughter of Loyal Canady Belcher and Frances Trollinger Perkerson Belcher, Mrs. Workman was born March 7, 1916, in their home in the Alton Park neighborhood of Chattanooga, TN. She attended Lookout Mountain Jr. High School and Kirkman High School.
Shortly after her marriage to Burrell Eugene Workman, Jr., she won a scholarship from the state of Tennessee for flying lessons along with a distinguished group of Chattanoogans.
Mrs. Workman was active in a number of organizations in her life time, most notably the Red Bank Baptist Church. She was also a member of the American Business Women's Association, the Chattanooga and Tennessee Republican Women's Club and was retired from EI DuPont.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Joy Workman Barnes (George R.) of Orangeburg, SC, and Dr. Mary Eugenia Workman Sanders (Tommy Max) of San Angelo, TX; two granddaughters, Rachel Sanders Fabre (Rudy) of Houston, TX, and Sarah Sanders Stokes of Phoenix, AZ; two great-grandsons, Will and Cale Skinner of Houston, TX.
Mrs. Workman was a lifelong Chattanoogan until she moved to Orangeburg, SC three years ago to be near her daughter.
Her funeral is planned for Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Red Bank Baptist Church, 4000 Dayton Boulevard, Chattanooga, TN 37415, with Reverend Bert Jones officiating.
Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN.
Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
