- Peck Trolinger Huffman of 3904 Lawndale Drive, went to be with the Lord, at his home on Aug. 19, 2003, his 90th birthday.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Bessemer United Methodist Church, 3015 East Bessemer Ave., Greensboro.
Mr. Huffman was born on Aug. 19, 1913, in the Sinking Creek community in Craig County, Va., to Clay and Carrie Hutchison Huffman. In 1936, Mr. Huffman came to Greensboro, where he was employed by Clover Brand Dairies from 1936 until 1940. On Oct. 4, 1940, he married Virginia Blanch McPherson of Greensboro. In January 1941, he started P.T. Huffman Transfer, Inc.
In 1943, Mr. Huffman went into the U.S. Army, where he served as First Sergeant with the 86th Black Hawk Infantry Division as a forward artillery observer. Mr. Huffman served in Germany during WW II, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was in the process of being transferred to the Pacific Theater by ship when it was announced that the war had ended.
Upon returning from WW II, he resumed operation of P.T. Huffman Transfer, Inc., which he and his wife, Virginia operated for 45 years before retiring in 1985.
In the late 1960s, Mr. Huffman began the development of an electrical fishing reel for deep sea fishing and in 1970, started Electric Fishing Reel Systems, Inc., a Greensboro based manufacturing company that produces the Elec-Tra-Mate Electric Fishing Reel, a product that is used worldwide.
Mr. Huffman was subsequently issued numerous patents for his fishing inventions.
Peck T. Huffman was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Guilford Lodge 656 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite, Eastern Star Chapter 14 and Gate City White Shrine in Greensboro.
He had been a member of Bessemer Methodist Church since 1940, where he served as Elder and financial board member.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Huffman Owsley of High Springs, Fla., and a brother, Robert Fulton Huffman of Craig County, Va.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia McPherson Huffman of 63 years; son, Carl T. Huffman and wife, Jill White-Huffman; step-granddaughter, Brittany; sisters, Edith Elmore of Richmond, Va., and Madge Taylor and husband, Floyd Taylor of Virginia Beach, Va.
