Death Of Wesley Clark
Several people from this city attended the funeral of J. W. Clark, one of the oldest residents of Denison, which were held Tuesday afternoon in Zion church, his pastor, Rev. L. W. Porter, officiating.
Uncle Wesley Clark, as he was known...[the following three or four words are obscured due to a fold mark in the newspaper clipping] ...-ward like a sheaf of wheat fully ripe. He had been in failing health for some months, in fact ever since the death of his son, but had been bedfast only a short time. In his last illness the consolations of the Holy Scriptures were ever uppermost in his mind and even up to the hour of his death the songs of Zion were upon his lips. He leaves to his sorrowing family, the memory of a personality to whom death held no terrors and for whom the grave had forever lost its sting.
John Wesley Clark had lived on the home farm in Denison for seventy-three years, moving there with his parents when but two years of age. He was converted under the ministry of Rev. Sabine during the latter's first pastorate in this vicinity and for 38 years had endeavored to lead the Christian life.
He leaves to comfort his surviving wife, two daughters and a son, all grown and at home with their mother. Interment was made in Zion cemetery.

Notes - Biography of John Wesley Clark, 1910 "Lawrence Co Biographical", pg 659-660: "CLARK, John Wesley.--The farming activities of Lawrence County are increasing in volume and value with the development and improvement of this locality. The discovery of oil has greatly advanced the value of some farming properties, so that the owners of tracts of this class are to be considered fortunate. John Wesley Clark, of Section 2, Dennison Township, a successful farmer and stockman, is one of the representative men of his locality. Mr. Clark was born in Dennison Township, October 5, 1844, a son of George Washington Clark, now deceased, who was a farmer and cooper of the township.
George W. Clark was born in Kentucky, February 7, 1806, and was there reared on a farm. Losing his father in the War of 1812, he was forced to help his mother, who moved to a farm in Ohio. There she married again. As he grew up, George W. Clark learned the cooper's trade in Ohio, and engaged in its conduct quite extensively. While still living in Ohio, he married Mary Drollinger, born in North Carolina, October 26, 1804, but taken to Ohio in girlhood. Ten children were the result of this marriage, two of whom died in infancy, but four sons and four daughters attained to maturity, and of them all John W. Clark is the youngest. In 1839 George W. Clark came to Illinois, settling in Dennison Township, where he entered 160 acres from the Government, at $1.25 per acre. He and his sons cleared this property, and improved it. In the beginning they lived in a log house, but later built a frame dwelling and there he died. Early in life he was a Whig, later becoming a Republican, while in religious faith he was a Methodist. His death occurred when he was seventy-four. His wife also died at about the same age.
The education of John W. Clark was secured in the log schoolhouse of his neighborhood, and he was reared on the homestead to very hard work. As a return for his labor he inherited a portion of the homestead, and bought out the interests of the other heirs. On June 9, 1875, Mr. Clark and Martha Tinsley were married. She was born in Knox County, Ky., October 24, 1857, but in 1862 her family came to Dennison Township, where her father, William Tinsley, also a native of Kentucky, became a farmer and carpenter. In 1861 he enlisted in a Kentucky regiment for service in the Union army, and served until he was taken sick, which necessitated his honorable discharge. After his recovery and location to Illinois, he once more enlisted and served until the close of the war. While living in Kentucky he married Mary Hargus, who was born in Virginia of Irish descent. Of the five children born to the parents of Mrs. Clark, she is the youngest. Mr. Tinsley died when only forty-seven years of age, his early demise without doubt being occasioned by the hardships endured as a soldier. He was a member of the G.A.R., a Republican in politics, and in religious faith a Methodist.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Clark continued to live on their present farm. They now have 170 acres, and have a very pleasant home. Mr. Clark has made all the improvements on his property, and helped to clear a part of it while it was still owned by his father. Mr. and Mrs. Clark have had the following children: Sarah Jane (deceased); Essie, Clara, Charles, Manfred and Harley, all born on the present farm. In his political life Mr. Clark has been a Republican, and is faithful in his devotion to his party. He is a member of the Methodist Church, and is liberal in his contributions to its support. He is an excellent farmer, a good business man, and is worthy of the confidence he has inspired among his neighbors."
