Notes - Very little is known about Martha and Phillip's life together. They were married only three months when the census enumerator came knocking. They lived in Phillip's home area, Kingsbury, Union Township, LaPorte County where he was a hotel keeper with $1,200 in real estate. Curiously, there does not seem to be a hotel in this township, nor do Phillip and Martha have any one else living with them. Their immediate neighbors were all single family households with their own dwelling numbers. The occupation of "hotel keeper" indicates that he was an owner, but perhaps he was instead a hotel manager working in the city of LaPorte or another nearby town. Another explanation is that he was planning to be a hotel keeper. On the same day as the census enumeration, 27 July, Phillip bought Lots 1, 2, and 3 in Kingsbury for $1,500 from Joseph Tennis. Perhaps his plan was to build a hotel on these lots. Within a year Martha and Phillip had a son Gabriel P. a namesake for Martha's father. The "P" probably stands for Phillip although there is no official confirmation of that in records pertaining to him; he appears always as Gabriel P.
Martha was widowed before 1870 and she and Gabriel moved in with her parents. Phillip was the right age to serve in the Civil War, but searches of the Report of the Adjutant General for the State of Indiana and the online indexes of the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System turned up no listings for Phillip Tennis. There are no estate records for a Phillip Tennis and he is not buried in the Sauktown Cemetery where Martha's family had been burying their dead for many years before 1870. Records searched in conjunction with Martha and Gabriel P. also do not refer to Phillip, so at this time no more is known about Phillip and little is known about Martha. She and Gabriel were still in her father's household in 1880 and she died in 1886. Her grave in the Sauktown Cemetery is marked with a small monument just to the right of the large Drollinger monument. No will or probate records were found.
