Evidently, Schuyler's aspirations went beyond a farm in Indiana, too, so he followed his brother Erastus to the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical Institute, graduating in 1881, just three years after Erastus. And like Erastus, he soon married. But there the similarity ends. Erastus returned home to La Porte and set up a practice in neighboring South Bend. Schuyler hop scotched the country from Indiana to Illinois to Kansas to Michigan to California then back to Michigan one last time. Even when he was at home in Indiana, he moved around - he was enumerated twice in the 1880 census, once on the farm with his parents and a few days later at his sister Josephine's in town. Both residences were crowded. Out on the farm his parents were housing his newlywed brother Quin and bride as well as younger brother George. In town Josephine had two daughters at home and was boarding a young man. Maybe Schuyler went back and forth that summer or maybe he was just visiting his sister the day the census take stopped by.
Soon after graduating from medical school, Schuyler headed to Illinois and as reported in the Bureau County Republican of 15 June 1882, "Rev. A. A. Robertson married Schuyler C. Drollinger of Wyanet and Minerva A. Baker of Neponset in June." Minerva was the daughter of Henry and Susan (Boyer) Baker. A newspaper article detailing Schuyler's parents 50th wedding anniversary (1884) lists his residence as Wyanette,[Wyanet] Illinois, which is in Bureau County. By 1890 at least he had moved on with his wife and young son, living for a whilein Kansas City before moving yet again in 1893. The family is listed in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, on the June, 1894 Michigan census, having resided in the county 8 months. Their Grand Rapids neighborhood had another physician, but also a shoemaker, grocery clerk, cabinet maker, electrician, and stone mason. Surprisingly, Schuyler does not appear in any Grand Rapids directories until 1901 when was a traveling agent for Valley City Pharmacal. Perhaps he had trouble setting up a new practice or getting a license. He resided at 309 Paris Avenue, and although Minerva is not listed, son Howard is listed as a student and a boarder at the home.
On 5 February 1902 Minerva died of consumption and heart failure. Her obituary was published in the Herald of Truth, a Mennonite newspaper. There is no mention of either Minerva or Schuyler being Mennonites, but her father and mother were "Bro. Henry and Susannah Baker" Survivors were her husband, Schuyler, her 19 year old son [noname given], her mother [no name], her sister, Mrs. Emma Arnold, South Bend, Indiana, and brothers David Baker of Lakeville, Indiana, Aaron of Romulus, Michigan, and Benjamin, Wadsworth, Medina County, Ohio. Minerva was buried in Block M, Lot 62 of the Valley City, now OakHill, Cemetery, Grand Rapids. The obituaries of Minerva's parents make it clear that Minerva was raised a Mennonite and that she spent part of her childhood in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Her father Henry Baker, a "faithful brother in the Church," died of typhoid fever 4 October 1874 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Minerva's mother, Susan(Boyer) Baker Holdeman, died 28 March 1904, also of congestion of the lungs. She was "a devoted member of the Mennonite church for many years" and was buried in the Mennonite burying ground in Wadsworth,Ohio. Minerva's family lived in St. Joseph County for at least four years before her father died and her mother and siblings continued to live there in 1880. However, by that time, Minerva had gone to live with her uncle D. S. Boyer in Bureau County, Illinois, where she married Schuyler. Minerva and Schuyler may have been acquainted in Indiana or perhaps that is why Schuyler went in Illinois.
After Minerva's death Schuyler continued to live at 309 Paris Avenue for several years, but he was a traveling agent for only one more year. In his remaining years in Grand Rapids, he earned his living as a physician. Although Howard was 20 by this time, perhaps Schuyler decided he needed to be more of a presence in his life or maybe it had taken this long for him to get his Michigan license to practice medicine. During these years Howard remained a boarder and a student, but in 1908 there was a change: Howard was an electrical engineer and father and son had a new address at 110 N. Union.
With his son's education completed Schuyler left Grand Rapids. No longer listed in Grand Rapids directories, his whereabouts are unknown until 1920 when he surfaces in Los Angeles with a wife, Emma R. There is no record of this second marriage in either Grand Rapids or Los Angeles marriage record indexes between 1902 and 1920. More information is needed to continue the search.
Howard meanwhile lived at the Los Angeles YMCA in 1910, earning his living as the proprietor and clerk in a motorcycle shop, so he sought warmer climes once he completed his education. Los Angeles marriage license records have two for Howard within two months with the same woman. The records are in June and August of 1915, but in 1920 he resided with his father, sans a wife, so perhaps no marriage took place. A more in-depth study of the records in Los Angeles County is necessary to shed some light on this anomaly.
This 1920 enumeration lists the birthplace of Schuyler's father as unknown and that of his mother as England. His age is off a year or two and his son's birthplace is Indiana. This incorrect information was probably provided by Schuyler's wife who might have no knowledge of her husband's parents. The most surprising thing about the 1920 enumeration is Schuyler's occupation, that of an automobile salesman,so far a field from his training. He may never have practiced in California. His card in the AMA Deceased Physicians' File is annotated"not in practice."
Even before Schuyler left Michigan, eclectic medicine was being discredited. As was discussed in Erastus's biography, there was growing concern in the United States about the inadequate training of physicians. Flexner's 1910 report was scathing in its assessment of medical schools. While the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical Institute did survive as the only eclectic training ground, that whole branch of medicine was falling on hard times. California has a history of being on the cutting edge and the cutting edge of medicine in this period was based on laboratory results and practical experience, neither of which were particularly evident in eclectic medicine. Of course, Schuyler was also well into middle age at this time, having been bornin 1856, so he may have decided to retire from medicine. His son and the boarder in the household were auto salesmen, also, and may have convinced Schuyler to join them. Howard, after all, had been selling motorcycles in 1910. All of them are working on their "own account,"so they were not employed by a particular dealer. Emma was an artist with her own studio.
Schuyler died in Los Angeles 27 July 1927 and was buried in Grand Rapids according to a two line obituary in a LaPorte, Indiana newsaper. The assumption was that his son Howard buried him next to his first wife Minerva. However, Schuyler is not buried in the Valley City, now Oakhill, Cemetery. Or, at least he is not in the burial records of the cemetery. He did buy two plots in 1902 and they are the resting places for Minerva Drollinger (1902) and Emma Drollinger(1925). The cemetery administrator Alva Anderson stated that Emma was cremated which was unusual for 1925. She suggested that Schuyler may also have been cremated and his ashes scattered over the two plots of his wives or clandestinely buried there as she believes was sometimes the case. According to Ms. Anderson the Valley City Cemetery, studded with large monuments and mausoleums, was the cemetery of choice for the more prominent residents of Grand Rapids. In 1938 it combined with Oakhill, the cemetery across the road. Ms. Anderson reports that she herself merged all the written information from both cemeteries and entered them into cemetery's records' database, so she is certain there is no record of Schuyler's burial in the records of either cemetery.
