Robert was born in Flint, Michigan on February 14, 1931, the son of the late Francis and Edith (Trollinger) Ballard.
He attended Flint Northern High School and was drafted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Dona J. Randolph while on leave before being stationed in Germany. Dona joined him there and they traveled a lot while in Europe.
One they were back home, he returned to work for his dad at Ballard and Ballard Coal, Acorn Lumber and Builder's Market. He learned the construction trade totally and worked it the rest of his life.
In about 1977 he and Dona bought an old farmhouse in Flushing. He remodeled it to her taste and she redecorated it completely. They lived there about 38 years. They both loved it.
Dad also spent his whole adult life as a member of Genesee Sportsman's Club. He was President of the club for many years and the Treasurer. He shot trap and skeet, but mostly won trophies for trap. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. Hunting was usually at Houghton Lake staying at the cabin with his father-in-law, Harold "Poppy". All three kids joined in the hunting and shot their first deer with dad and Poppy. He was a life member of the NRA and loved fly fishing and really loved his grandkids.
After retirement he and Dona moved to a condo in Flushing. He still enjoyed shooting until his eyesight got too poor and he had to give it up.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dona; his daughter, Debby and Tim Lintz; his oldest son, Mike and Bethann Ballard; his youngest son, Jamie and Lisa Ballard; grandchildren, Chad and Lindsey Ballard, Jessica and Andrew Palumbo, Amanda Ballard, Mallory Ballard and Lanie Ballard; great-grandchildren, Avery and Lucas Ballard, Aleena, Myla and Kaelyn Palumbo; sister, Helen Baum and nephews, Steven and Larry (Flo) Baum and favorite niece, Judy Bouchard.
