Notes - Abraham came to IN in 1829 from Rockingham, cty, Virginia. (Ref article by Loretta Dugas in Martha H. Drollinger Christy 'hard' file)
Supposedly, Abraham was the neighborhood banker. Abraham allegedly kept his money in an old potbelly stove in the living room and made loans from it. In 1829, Abraham and Jacob decided to follow and advance of civilization and moved to what was then the far west and settle in Fountain Co, IN. They settled near each other, not being over three-fourth of a mile apart. Abraham was a cabinet maker by trade and Jacob, a farmer. In the new country, they plied their vocations and began making homes for themselves in the solitude of the forest, living in tents until cabins could be erected. They sent their children to school in the first crude school house built in the district. It was built of logs as the other buildings with a puncheon floor and light was admittred to the interior by means of greased paper on the windows. .The religious services of the neighborhood were held at the home of Abraham. Thus commencing life in a new country surrounded by nature in her wildest state they cleared the forest and made homes for themselves and children.
