Obituary of Daniel D. Michael
Daniel D. Michael was born in December, 1814, in Dark County, Ohio, and died at his home in Braymer, Missouri, March 9th 1907, age 92 years and about 3 months. Funeral services were conducted in the M.E. Church at Braymer at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 10th, by his pastor, Reverand H. Crampton, after which the body was taken to Black Oak for burial. A large congregation of friends had assembled at the Black Oak church and a sermon was preached by Rev. J.D. Sprague, after which interment was made in the Black Oak cemetery. The pall bearers at that place were G.W., P.L., and John T. Davis, W.T. Moad, and S.S. Shrum, all born and raised within four miles of Black Oak. Their ages were from 45 to 65 years and every man had know the deceased from their childhood.
Mr. Michael had long been identified with the West. When a young man, he came to Illinois, where for a number of years he resided. In 1851 he emigrated to Missouri and established his home new Black Oak, where for a generation or more he was a stalwart ctitizen, a leader in secular and religious affairs. While yet residing in Ohio, Mr. Michael was married, in 1838, to Miss Nancy Tillet, but was soon left a widower by his wife's death. He was married, in Illinois, in 1842, to Miss Ann Petree. To them were born five children: Ellen, now Mrs. William T. Owen of Hayward, OK: William A., who died in 1896: John N. and D.A. now of Cowgill, and Robert Andrew, who died in infancy. His wife having died in January, 1887, Mr Michael was again married, on August 4th 1887 to Mrs. Mary Robinson (or Robertson?) As a faithful wife, she comforted him in his declining years, watched at his bedside during the weeks of his last illness, and remains to mourn the loss of him with whose life her own was knit in the afternoon of earth's day. When but a boy, probably 17 years of age, Mr. Michael was converted under the preaching of Rev. James Findley, one of the spiritual firebrands of early Methodism. He also heard Peter Cartwright and other pioneers of the days when the Gospel truth struck men to earth and cries for forgiveness and shouts of regenerated souls went up from altars at many a Methodist camp meeting and mourners' bench. His was one of the conversions that shake soul and body to the depths and leave no room for doubt. Many a love feast and prayer meeting has heard his witness of Christ's regenerating power in his life. From long before the war until 1890, when he moved to Cowgill, Mr. Michael was one of the leaders in the M.E. Church at Black Oak, which class he helped to organize. Always a liberal contributor, his means assisted in building and maintaining the churches at Black Oak and Cowgill. After changing his residence to Braymer in 1894, he identified himself with the M.E. church there and no man was more faithful in performance of duty, in generous giving and in loyalty to God and the church.
Of his posterity there remain 3 children, 30 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. The last of the old pioneers, like a giant oak which marked the spot where civilization first laid hold on crude and untamed nature, for years Mr. Michael stood alone. His passing leaves the dead level of younger generations with none who can trace in memory the days of "Auld Land Gyne," which were to him as yesterday.
To Daniel Michael, full of years and with much work well done, new life has come: life more abundant. On his head has shone the morning light and never dims to shade and twilight. The gates have opened and he is with God.
