Falling from a swing bridge which connects the mainland with to an island farm in the Raystown river two miles south of Saxton yesterday resulted in the death of Dr. Earl C. Rhodes at the home of his brother, Ralph Rhodes. Dr. Rhodes, a veterinarian, resided with a sister, Mrs. Henry Schleuter of Saxton, R. D. Yesterday afternoon he received a call to the farm of Stanley Cowall, located across the river and which is reached only by boat and by a swing bridge connecting the Cowall farm with the Ralph Rhodes farm, The veterinarian was seen about 3:30 o'clock but when he failed to arrive at the Cowall farm, Mr. Cowall started across the bridge to the Rhodes farm and when midway on the bridge he looked over and saw a man lying in the river. After rescuing him from the river, a physician was summoned from Saxton. An examination by the physician it was evident that Dr. Rhodes was fatally Injured. However, Dr. Rhodes was taken by ambulance to the Everett hospital where he expired. Dr. Rhodes was a native of Liberty township, Bedford county, and was born on Feb. 21, 1894. the son of Daniel and Ella (Rowser) Rhodes. The father is deceased. Surviving are one daughter, Erleen, his mother Mrs. Ella Rhodes, and one sister and one brother, Mrs. Henry Schleuter and Ralph Rhodes, all of Saxton. R. D. Dr. Rhodes was educated as veterinarian at Grand Rapids, Mich., and practiced at Nazareth, Everett and at Martinsburg where he was located for a number of years and where he also was affiliated with the state department for several years. Later he went to Bedford where he was associated with Dr. R. D. Hoffman and lately he had been located in the Saxton, making his home with his sister at Saxton R. D.
