- Marie Chapman Stamey, age 88, of Taylorsville, died Monday, December 15, 2003, following a stroke. Mrs. Stamey died at the home of her daughter, Dorothy, in Annapolis, Maryland. Since 1996, she had made her home in Annapolis. Her happiest moments were those spent on her family's North Carolina farm in Alexander County. She was extremely proud that her farmhouse was built in 1854. She was born in Sanborne, Iowa, June 9, 1915, the only child of the late Jay Lee Chapman and Maude Watts Chapman. Mrs. Stamey earned degrees from Mitchell College and from Appalachian State University. She was owner of Trio Foods in Hiddenite and of Stamey Farms. A retired teacher, she taught in the Alexander County Schools for thirty years. She was a member of Taylorsville Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Women's Sunday School Class for many years. Each person has a time and a purpose in life, and Marie's purpose was one of inspiration. She inspired every student to do his best, and she expected nothing less of herself. She was compared by her students to a jewel whose sparkle stays with you. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W. Scott Stamey, in 1996. Together, they owned and operated Trio Foods for sixty years. Survivors include a son, William Scott Stamey of Loveland, Colorado; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Charles Hargrove of Annapolis, Maryland; four grandchildren, Steve Stamey of Hiddenite, Sandra Punch of Maiden, Eleanor Richmond of Severna Park, Maryland, and Scott Hargrove of Atlanta, Georgia; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in the Three Forks Baptist Church Cemetery in Alexander County. Memorials may be made to Taylorsville Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 507, Taylorsville, NC 28681 or to First Presbyterian Church, 144 Conduit Street, Annapolis, MD.
