George McKinney left Spartanburg, S.C. and a wife and three children behind to fight for S.C. He became one of the Ambulance Patrol. He was captured in Black Bottom, VA in August 1864, and was imprisoned to Point Lookout , MD. He was sent on a train January 1865, being part of a prisoner exchange. He was debilitated and ill with chronic disease and starvation. He entered the hospital in Richmond City and lived only till the end of February 1865. He is buried in a very prominent place in Hollywood Cemetery, near a UDC Monument.
