Mrs. Mary Engle County's Fifth Polio Fatality
Mrs. Mary Engle,27, of Winchester, today followed her husband in death. She
passed away at Ball Hospital in Muncie at 10:10 a.m., just nine days to the
minute of her husband, Robert A.
The death of Mrs. Engle brought to five the number of polio fatalities in
Randolph county since June 16. Her husband was the fourth fatality, others were
Mrs. Maxine Garringer and Brenda Kae Tittle, both of Ridgeville and Stephen
Tipple of Winchester.
Physically and mentally fatiqued after caring for her husband during his fatal
illness at Ball Hospital and from the ordeal of his death and last rites, Mrs.
Engle was taken to Muncie last Tuesday night for rest and observation.
Listed as a polio suspect, she soon was diagnosed as position and her condition
rapidly became worse. Late last week she developed paralysis of the lower limbs,
which over the week end spread through the upper part of her body.
Her attending physician gave little hope for her recovery Sunday and earlier
Monday morning had said her condition was hopeless.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jane, four and one-half years old and
Susanne, two.
The body was removed to the Maynard and Walker mortuary in Winchester. Funeral
services will be announced later.
(Private funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the funeral
home. Interment was made in Fountain Park cemetery. Other survivors are the
father Glenn Lovett of Denver, Colo.; the mother Mrs. Otho Elliott of
Middletown, IN; the mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mrs. and Mrs. Clarence Engle
of Winchester; one half sister, Marie Charlene Lovett of Anderson; one half
brother, G. David Lovett and three step-sisters, Mrs. Ardelle Hyall of Denver,
Colo., Mrs. R. C. Amborse and Mrs. Kenneth Yeats, both of Anderson.)
Obit is on the Union City Newspaper site.
She died of Polio on Aug. 8,1949 at Ball Memorial Hospital. Her husband Robert A. Engle died about the same time of Infantile Paralysis (Polio) He was also a WWI Navy Flier and son of Clarence Engle.
