Obituary - Mary E. Moore
Last Friday morning our entire community was brought under the shadow of gloom when we learned of the sudden death of Mrs. Mary E. [Etta Ogden] Moore, who was taken seriously ill on Sunday before, from which she found no relief. Although the best medical aid was procured until her spirit took its flight to the unseen world to mortal eyes, which released her from her sufferings with pneumonia.
Mrs. Moore was naturally endowed with excellent qualities that gave her a prominent place in the hearts of the people with whom she had to do in life.
Since January 7, 1887, she has walked with G. [Green] B. [Berry] Moore as her husband, sharing equally her portion of the cares and sorrows of life with unfaltering determination, until a beautiful home three miles west of Gravity had been secured which would seem to furnish them with one of the principle things for happiness. But, alas! how uncertain are the temporal things of this life. That dread enemy death called her hence at an unexpected hour, and now her beautiful home is draped in the mantle of sorrow and the peace and tranquility that once prevailed in that home is now turned into weeping and loneliness. The mother of ten children (with one of that number having crossed the river of death), leaving a broken-hearted husband and nine children to mourn her departure, with a host of sympathizing friends.
She was born in Davis County, Iowa, January 7, 1868, being 40 years old at the time of her death.
The funeral services were held at the Christian church in Gravity on the following Sunday at 11 o'clock, conducted by the writer, assisted by Rev. Babcock, after which the remains were followed to the Gravity cemetery by a very large funeral delegation, led by about thirty Modern Woodmen, who in regular order marched to her last resting place.
There were present at the funeral, of her original family, her mother, Mrs. Caroline [Hanshaw] Ogden and four brothers as follows: Orlando and Ross of Unionville, Iowa; C. [Charles] A. [Augustus], of Des Moines, Iowa, and J. [Jesse] J., of Pierce, Colorado.
The family have the entire sympathy of the community.
