Notes - John Sherman Crayne was born in Umatilla, Oregon. At a young age he and his family moved to the Oregon City area. His younger sister Helen said that he'd ride his bike over the Oregon City bridge's arches as a young teen. He trained as a butcher and later worked at Safeway as a meat cutter. He joined the Army in 1944 and left his wife, Elizabeth Francis 'Betty' Crayne (Ballard) and young daughter, Patricia Ann Crayne to fight in the South Pacific. During his time there he was exposed to high doses of radiation and once home contracted leukemia. During his remaining 10 or so years he had a son, which they named John Sherman Crayne III. He worked with his father-in-law to build a house for his young family. It is located on Blanton Street in the Jennings Lodge area. He died from leukemia in 1957 and is buried up at Mt. View Cemetery in Oregon City. A flowering cherry tree was planted near his grave since it was a favorite of his.
