The Rev. George M. Kissinger III of Gloucester, Va., went home to be with his Savior on July 4, 2007. He was 94 years old.
The Rev. Kissinger was pastor of Union Baptist Church from 1949 to 1960 and served as Director of Missions for the Peninsula Southern Baptist Association from 1960 to 1985. He served in WWII as an Army Chaplain and received the Bronze Star Medal for bravery. When he was a young man he also received the Carnegie Institute Medal for heroism. His life was punctuated by a strong sense of integrity and a sincere desire to serve God and exalt the name of Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his loving family members: his wife, Margaret "Peggy"; two sons, George M. Kissinger IV and John Kissinger; daughter, Judy; and grandson, Jason.
Survivors also include a special nephew and family, Danny, Patricia, Mark and Tara Kissinger, along with numerous other nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to the members of Gloucester Point Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church, with sincere gratitude to Pastor John Ippolito and Greta Ippolito. A special thanks also to Teresa Hogge, who exceeded her capacities as a nurse with her compassion and friendship, along with the special care and friendship of Marie Bazemore and Angie Jenkins of hospice.
Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Franklin Hall, will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Union Baptist Church. The Rev. Patrick Coffey will offer a prayer and longtime friend Hunter Riggins will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park Cemetery, after which the family will receive friends in a fellowship in Union Hall.
