- Walter Delbert Southhall Sr., 81, of Farmville, died Sunday, March 5, 2006.
He was born September 25, 1924 in Prospect, a son of the late Walter Otha Southall and Edna Cook Southall.
Mr. Southall served on the Board of Supervisors for 16 years for the Farmville and Lockett District. He was former owner and president of Southall Oil Company and past Grand Master of the State of Virginia for the International Order of Odd Fellows and a faithful member of the Farmville Lodge until his death. He was a life member of Farmville Fire Department with 57 years of service, a member of Virginia Farm Bureau and an active cattle farmer.
He was a graduate of Farmville high School and attended Hampden-Sydney College. He served in the US Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Southall was a Deacon at Farmville Baptist Church and was former chairman of the local Selective Service Board. He was past chairman of the Prince Edward Democratic Party of Prince Edward County.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Shockley Southall; two daughters, Jayne S. Smith and her husband, Richard of Portsmouth and Susan S. Lawman and her husband, Robert of Farmville; a son, Delbert Southall Jr and his wife Sarah P. of Farmville and six grandchildren, Mia Peters and husband, Jeff, Dayna J. Stanley, Clint Smith, Joseph H. Wilck IV, Elizabeth C. Wilck and Kelly E. Southall. He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Southall August.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Farmville Baptist Church with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
