Notes - A retired machinist when I first met him, I was amazed at his energy and industry. I had leave in country when I Permanent Change of Stationed to Germany. I had made a reservation in the Gasthaus Lowe and checked in. I came down stairs and there he and his wife, Frieda, were sitting drinking wine. We recognized each other from the pictures we had exchanged and he brought me over to his table. Some how through my poor German and the help of the landlord's daughter we managed to communicate. The upshot of our meeting was my bags were gotten and I stayed at their daughter's home. He worked his vinyards and apple trees and in the fall made wine and schnapps. He too had a zest for life and living. In his seventies he was also a volunteer fireman. I can remember the night the shoe store in Ellmendingen caught fire over a Christmas holiday and he was off and out in the cold fighting it. He and Oma showed me many adventures. I was glad I got to share in their golden wedding celebration. He too had that joy of living that made being around him a time of happiness. He continued the business founded by his father.
