SUNNY LIFE PASSES OUT
California Pioneer, Having Approached the Century Mark, Called to His Reward at His Home Here
The death of Joseph Hockney (Hackney) Evans, which occurred in this city on Thursday morning, after having reached the age of 92 years, has removed a well-known and estimable man. The deceased first came to California by ox-team in 1850, and after spending three years in mining, returned to Iowa. In 1901 he brought his family to Los Angeles and became a permanent resident.
Evans was born in Virginia in 1820 and in his long career was soldier, miner, farmer and lumberman. At the age of 20 he became a resident of Burlington, Iowa, where he cast his first ballot for Fremont, and in 1846 he enlisted as a volunteer in the Mexican War, as a member of the First Indiana Volunteers under Gen. Taylor. At the close of his service he married and three years later made his first trip across the desert to California.
In 1853 he went back to Iowa and engaged in farming, three years later becoming the partner of his brother, Evan Evans, in the lumber business.
In 1861 he again became a farmer, in which he spent all the remaining days of his active life.
His wife died in 1871 and he later married again, his second wife having died in this city, February 11, 1910.
The deceased lived a beautiful life as a member of the First Methodist Church and his death was like the passing of a sunbeam.
He leaves a son by his first marriage, John W. Evans of Livingston, Mont., who is en route here to attend the funeral, and also a son by the second marriage, Benjamin Gregg Evans of this city.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 10 o?clock a.m., at the chapel of Peck & Chase.
