- WILLIAM JACOBS, JR. (ABT 1766 - 1842)
&
SARAH CHESS (ABT 1770 - AFT 1842)
William Jacobs, Jr., was the first child of WILLIAM JACOBS, SR., and ELIZABETH DROLLINGER (TROLLINGER). He was probably born in Maurice River Township of Cumberland County, New Jersey, in about 1766-1768.
William, Jr., moved with his parents to East Pennsboro Township of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, sometime before 1778. Then they moved to George's Creek Hundred area of Allegany County, Maryland, in 1788. There he was married to Sarah Chess by Methodist Church circuit rider Reverend William Shaw in 1790 and they lived at the later site of the Lonaconing Iron Foundry. Nine children were born to them there, namely:
Susanah in 1791, Mary Alice in 1793, Henry in 1795, Matthew in 1798, William, III, in 1803, Anne in 1805, Julia Ann in 1807, Elizabeth in 1808 and Daniel Ball in
1809.
Then, before the 1810 Census was taken in Allegany County and after it was taken in Pennsylvania, Henry moved northward to Richhill Township of Bedford County (now Greene County), Pennsylvania. There he purchased 105 acres of land on the Thomas Fork of Wheeling Creek, about two miles above Ryerson's Station. Three more children were born to he and Sarah there, namely: Jonah (Jonas) in about 1811, Sarah in 1815, and Eli in 1818. While living there, Henry received his share of his father's estate on March 22, 1837.
A little is known about William, Jr. and his family while they live in Richhill Township of Greene County. It is known that his son, Eli, purchased land there along the Ned Millers Fork of Wheeling Creek. Also, while living in Franklin Township of Greene County, his son, Henry, had a warrant issued on June 9, 1840, to survey 109 acres of land directly south of Eli's in Richhill Township. This land was part of a 400-acre tract previously warranted to James Leiper, a land speculator, who had it surveyed in 1789 but never patented it. It had been previously settled on and improved in 1829, but apparently later abandoned. Henry received title to this land from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on September 2, 1840.
In addition, Peter Chess, who married Anne Jacobs, the daughter of William, Jr. and Sarah, had acquired the adjoining tract of land directly south of Henry's in 1838. Also Jonah (Jonas), the son of William, Jr. and Sarah, bought 160 acres of land nearby and lived on it for a while. Thus, this part of Richhill Township became the home area of Willam Jacobs, Jr's family and from there some of its members migrated to other parts of the growing nation.
William, Jr., died in Richhill Township of Greene County, Pennsylvania, in 1842. His will was recorded there on November 19, 1842. The date and place of Sarah's death is presently unknown, but she died after the death of William, Jr., in 1842.
