Gordon,
I have reviewed the information I have on Mary Trollinger, dau. of Joseph J. Trollinger(1822-1904). She married William Wiley 1869. The two sources I have (both secondary) refer to him as Capt. Wiley. (This of course is not confirmed by the Civil War records).
One source is the 1926 reunion lecture "Patriots and Pioneers" by Dr. Thornton Whitsett. The other source is a 1937 genealogy chart put together by Dr. J. A. Hunter of Elon College. I suspect that the 1926 material was used in preparing this chart. However, the 1926 lecture refers to "William Wiley", and the 1937 chart refers to "James Wiley."
I discovered another puzzle. The "American Civil War Research Database" has the identical information you sent me except, They do not list 'wife: Mary Trollinger, dau. of Joseph J. Trollinger', but added:
Other Information:
born in Emory, VA
died 7/15/1895 in Ashe County, NC
(Born 1844. Attended Emory & Henry College. Wife; Helen
Palmiter. Mercantile, 1876.)
After the War he lived in Ashe County, NC

This seems to suggest that Mary died, or he left prior to 1876. But both sources show they had six children.
This genealogy search seems to lead to more and more questions!
Thanks, Dan Trollinger
(Note I think the Wiley listed as attended Emory and Henry is a different one due to the discrepancy in death dates GLD)
