Married Three Sisters
Lived to Old Age
----------
SHELBYVILLE, Ind., Oct. 26 -- Joseph Monroe, age 98, the oldest resident farmer of this county, died today on the farm he entered from the government seventy years ago. He was a direct lineal descendant of James Monroe, fifth president. His family represents five generations and the hands of some of his children are now white with age.
He had been married three times, the wives, Harriet, Emma and Eliza Ann Keeler, being sisters and by each of whom he reared a large family. Only nine of his children survive him. His last wife died about ten years ago and a few years later he was engaged to a fourth sister, then 80 years and a maid, but she died a few days before the day on which they were to wed.
Monroe had the confidence of a large circle of business men during the active years of his life, being a prosperous farmer and stock dealer, and for sixty years took an active part in local politics, always, with few exceptions affiliating with the Democrats.
