History - Mary's feet were frozen from the ordeal crossing to Utahwith the Martin Handcart Company in 1856. The family stories tell usthe people of Payson used sewing scissors to cut the dead flesh fromher feet after they were settled in Payson. She hobbled the rest ofher life. The faith she had is evident in the following written byMary Soar Taylor Moore on 20 Feb. 1881. This letter was written andplaced in a Relief Society chest to be opened fifty years later. Itwas addressed to John C. Taylor, a grandson, at Payson, Utah.
I, Mary Moore desire to leave to my posterity a biographical sketch ofmy life to be read by them fifty years hence for their information andbenefit. I was born in the village of Beauverlee, Nottinghamshire,England on January 22, 1825. My parents at that time were of noreligious persuasion. My parent's names are Henry Soar and EdithBurrows.
At an early age, I joined the Methodist Society. At the age ofeighteen, I married William Jesse Taylor who was not a professor ofreligion. By him, I had two sons named William Henry and Jesse Soar.We lived very happy for a little over two years when I was left awidow. Three years from this time I joined the Church of Jesus Christof Latter-day Saints and in the year of 1856, I with my two sonsstarted for Utah Territory. We left our home on the 26th of May andcrossed the sea in the Ship Horizon.
We had a prosperous voyage of nearly forty days and landed at Bostonfrom which place we traveled by rail to Iowa City, State of Iowa. Weleft Iowa City as "Martin's Company". We had a perilous journey acrossthe plains, had to endure many hardships. We encountered snow in theBlack Hills, which continued until we arrived in Salt Lake City.
My son, William, was taken sick with the mountain fever 700 miles fromSalt Lake City, and Jesse and myself had to pull him in our cart untilwe arrived at the Sweetwater where teams from Salt Lake City met usand there we left out carts. Previous to this time, we had to subsiston four ounces of flour a day for nine days in the snow knee deep. Itis said six hundred started in our company and nearly one half diedbefore we arrived at our destination.
Many had their limbs badly frozen, William and myself among thenumber. We arrived in Salt Lake City on the last day of November, ofthe same year, after suffering many hardships and privations for thetruth's sake, but I know my record is sure.
We arrived in Payson on the 2nd of December and we were well treatedby the people. I could not stand on my feet for three months after Iarrived. In the month of February 1858, I married John K. Moore, beinghis third living wife. In the year 1860, in the month of July, myeldest son William died of a disease contracted while crossing theplains.
In the year 1862, my father arrived in Payson, having joined theChurch and emigrated. In the year 1864, my son Jesse married Sarah A.Marsh, who are living at this date, and have six living children andhave buried two.
In the year 1868, the female Relief Society was organized in Payson. Iwas appointed and set apart to act as second counselor to Jane B.Simons, President of said Society, which I hold today. I also hold theposition of second counselor to the President of the Silk Associationsof this place.
I have written this sketch of my life as stated for the benefit of mygrandchildren and others and I also add my testimony of the divinityof this work. I know it is the work of God and hope and trust that anyof my posterity that may come in possession of this may bestrengthened in their faith by it, and be worthy of such parentage fortruly we suffered much for their truth sake, but the reward of thefaithful is sure.
