- Charley Sherman Winscot, Sr.
Casper - At his request, there will be no services held for Charley Sherman "Sarge" Winscot, Sr., 89, who died Dec. 7 2007, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center Hospice of cancer. Burial will be at a later time at the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville.
He was born a twin on June 29 1918 in Omaha, Nebr., to farmers Sherman Richard and Loda Leona Winscot.
On Jun 15, 1938, he married Louise Smith in Coalville, Utah. They had four sons and were later divorced.
Joining the Army, Staff Sgt. Winscot proudly served in both WWII and Korea and was the recipient of many medals including a Purple Heart in each war, the Silver Star and Bronze Star. He still flew the flag, given him by his mother upon his discharge, on every holiday.
He loved his country, was honored to have served, and was grateful to spend his final days at the Sheridan VA among his brothers and have daily visits from his good friend, Chuck Medina.
July 11, 1953, only days before his discharge, he married the love of his life, his lifelong hunting and fishing companion, Johniev "Pet" Trollinger in Fort Worth, Texas.
Together they lived in several states including many years in Ketchikan, Alaska; and Casper, Riverton, Shoshoni, Sheridan, Lander and Jeffrey City.
He was an early stunt double for Gene Autry under the name Chuck North, a boxer, and a pilot who built his own float plane.
He was a regular at garage sales and picked up used fishing equipment and bicycles to refurbish and give to neighborhood children. He firmly believed that all children should experience the joy of knowing how to fish and the outdoors.
In September 2007, he moved from Riverton back to Casper to be nearer his niece and caregiver, Leila Blake.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Pet Winscot, four sons, Douglas of Puyallup, Wash.; Charley Jr. of Rigby, Idaho; Daniel of Glendale, Ariz.; and Raymond of Lakewood, Wash.; sister, Hattie Alice Sowers of Casper, brother, Robert of Omaha, Neb.; his niece, Leila Blake and her husband of Evansville; nephew, David Sowers of Dubois; and many other nieces, nephews, grad, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin sister, Charlotte Ermin Winscot (at birth); sister, Lois North; brothers, Ed and Earl North, and Martin Shomshor; and his favorite bird hunting border collie, Echo, on Dec. 3, 2007.
In Lieu of flowers or donations, he requested that everyone remember him by taking a child fishing and fly their flag every holiday.
