11402 | I3206 | Drollinger | Martha Henrietta | 5 Nov 1910 | 16 Sep 2012 | 0 | U.S., City Directories Name: Martha H Parkerson Gender: Female Residence Year: 1940 Street Address: ns Bayard Park dr 1 e St James blvd Residence Place: Evansville, Indiana, USA Spouse: Dale H Parkerson Publication Title: Evansville, Indiana, City Directory, 1940 (Correspondence between Martha and David H. Drollinger) 6-3-95 (3 Mar 1995) Dear David - Finally got together all the family history I have. Don't have too many dates - sorry. I'm enclosing copies of a newspaper clipping given to me by my brother John Samuel. Thought it was interesting as well as informative. I never knew my great, great grandfather had a brother Noah. Also enclosing copy of letter I received years ago and was not interested at that time and never bothered to answer. Now that I'm older I much regret it-could have had more history. I presume the writer of the letter is now dead. I was (I thought) too busy working for my first husband Dale Pakerson and rearing my two sons. I have 2 sons-Roger Dale living on Long Island, N.Y. working for a computer Co. Other son, Gary William, lives in Ky. and works for Am. Mobile Satellite Corp. Now married for 21 years (after my first husband died of heart) to John L. Christy. Both of us are retired. Spend our winters in San Juan, TX and summers at present address - we're avid trailerists. Good luck in your History project. Maybe some of my descendants will be interested. Who knows? Nice talking to you on phone. Martha H. Christy If ever in IN you and your family would be very welcome in any of the Bert Drollinger family's homes. The following letter was sent to Martha Henrietta Drollinger-Parkerson-Christy by Edward Bernard Drollinger 4 Mar 1963. Martha sent me, David H. Drollinger, a photo copy of the letter on 3 Jun 1995. Cleveland, Ohio March 4, 1963 Dear Mr. and Mrs. Parkerson, My wife and I just returned from Jacksonville where we buried my father, Winfield Drollinger. I wrote Bert Drollinger, and Goldie Minick (I assume you know her), from Florida. About two hours ago I received letter from Mrs. Minick containing "In Memoriam" slip printed for Fishero Funeral Home giving data on Bert's death. This is the first I knew of Bert's death. Belatedly, we wish to extend our regrets to Mrs. Parkerson. Enclosed letter was found in my father's effects. I intended writing you if I received no answer from Bert---hence I write anyway. Your brothers and sisters may have a slight interest in Winnie's death. Please tell them when you see or write to them. We met the two that are teachers---at Bert's one time; rest are strangers. As per your letter---I have the history on the Drollinger family, from how to find grave of first Drollinger that came to this continent in 1737 (born on banks of the Rhine 1672) to how some of family migrated to Indiana about 1825. Revolutionary war and pension records of Henry. Original deeds in Orange County, N.C., and also on record at capital at Raleigh granted 1759 and 1761 (could send you copies). One homestead at Haw River has the Ninth generation of this family living on it, large acreage. This is, indeed, a very historic family---one that settled this continent, and helped to build this nation. Someone who is interested should have this information to hand down to the future generations. We have no Children on (to) carry on. A few years ago I wrote to your brother, the minister, offering this history. Never heard from him. Perhaps he did not receive the letter; or, perhaps he thought I was trying to sell something---which of course I am not. Family history is pride. We don't sell our pride---we give it away. But, perhaps he just wasn't interested. Some people are not. It would probably be more important to those relatives of yours who have children who will carry the Drollinger name. Incidentally, there were four ways of spelling: Drollinger, Drolinger, Trollinger, Trolinger; the professional English penmen were constantly getting the spelling mixed up. Sometimes two or three ways on same deed. The farm where your father lived is itself rather historic. It is original land-grand, settled by the second Adam who migrated by wagon into virgin forest and helped build a new state---Indiana. I hope very much that the children of Bert can see fit to hang on to it, and keep it in Bert's family. (Just offering my sentiments on It!) Sometime when we are driving over your way we will stop and say "hello." If you folks should get to Cleveland, be sure and stop to see us. Would like to make your acquaintance, and would like to hear from you. Very Truly Yours, Ed. B. Drollinger (Edward Bernard Drollinger) 3495 Carr-Munn Rd., Cleveland 11, Ohio |

11406 | I2925 | Drollinger | Martha Matilda | 7 May 1836 | 25 May 1886 | 0 | Very little is known about Martha and Phillip's life together. They were married only three months when the census enumerator came knocking. They lived in Phillip's home area, Kingsbury, Union Township, LaPorte County where he was a hotel keeper with $1,200 in real estate. Curiously, there does not seem to be a hotel in this township, nor do Phillip and Martha have any one else living with them. Their immediate neighbors were all single family households with their own dwelling numbers. The occupation of "hotel keeper" indicates that he was an owner, but perhaps he was instead a hotel manager working in the city of LaPorte or another nearby town. Another explanation is that he was planning to be a hotel keeper. On the same day as the census enumeration, 27 July, Phillip bought Lots 1, 2, and 3 in Kingsbury for $1,500 from Joseph Tennis. Perhaps his plan was to build a hotel on these lots. Within a year Martha and Phillip had a son Gabriel P. a namesake for Martha's father. The "P" probably stands for Phillip although there is no official confirmation of that in records pertaining to him; he appears always as Gabriel P. Martha was widowed before 1870 and she and Gabriel moved in with her parents. Phillip was the right age to serve in the Civil War, but searches of the Report of the Adjutant General for the State of Indiana and the online indexes of the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System turned up no listings for Phillip Tennis. There are no estate records for a Phillip Tennis and he is not buried in the Sauktown Cemetery where Martha's family had been burying their dead for many years before 1870. Records searched in conjunction with Martha and Gabriel P. also do not refer to Phillip, so at this time no more is known about Phillip and little is known about Martha. She and Gabriel were still in her father's household in 1880 and she died in 1886. Her grave in the Sauktown Cemetery is marked with a small monument just to the right of the large Drollinger monument. No will or probate records were found. Kay Germain Ingalls 2003 |

In 1881, the same year he married Ida, they moved to a farm on the Platte River near Lowell, NE between Kenesaw, Minden and Kearney, NE. He and Ida had five children, three boys and two girls. Ida passed away within three days of giving birth to her youngest child, Frederick. Henry married his second and final wife, Azalia about fourteen months later and together they had five children as well, only this time it was three girls and two boys. (Ref Jacob produced three different Family Group Records for his father, Martin - one which inludes both wives, one for Martin and his first wife, Ida Clara Simpkins and one for Martin and his second wife, Azalia Emiline Roberts, the mother of Jake. That explains why you might see different ones associated with various facts that he gives. He has some info included on one which he does not on the others and visa versa. However, the vitals seem to be consistent between the three of them. They were all produced by Martin and Azalia's son, Jacob "Jake" Manford and given to me, David H. Drollinger, by him.) (David H. 11419 | I2850 | Drollinger | Martin Van Buren | 28 Mar 1837 | 25 Oct 1911 | 0 | Martin V.3 Drollinger (Elias2, Frederick1) was born 28 March 1837 in Ohio and died 25 October 1911 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. He married first Susanna Jane Sprowl 19 June 1863 in Roann, Wabash County, Indiana. Susanna, probable daughter of John and Elizabeth Sprowl, was born between 1841 and 1847 in Pennsylvania and died on 11 April 1875 in Wabash County, Indiana. Second Martin married Celia A. Belden 4 January 1876 in Roann, Wabash County, Indiana. Celia was born in 1856 in Delaware, died after 1914. Beneath the benignly serene surface of the Martin V. Drollinger described in Past and Present of Randolph County, was a man coping with gut-wrenching, migraine inducing family crises in several periods of his life. Reading only the biographical puffery in a piece on Martin's young son Harry, the researcher could be forgiven for thinking that Martin's 74 years were trouble free. Of course, just knowing that Martin had 12 children hints at an interesting life. Past and Present lauded him as such "a skilled farmer that the land retained its original fertility," and adds he died "after a life devoted to general farming ? rearing his large family in comfort and respectability on the old home place ..." There is sharp contrast between this bucolic description and the assaults on Martin's comfort and respectability as well as his emotions. Martin's life before his father's death in January 1871 may have matched the bucolic picture. He married a neighbor girl, Susanna Jane Sprowl, when he was 26 and had been farming for some time. Children came quickly, first two girls just 16 months apart, followed by two boys. Then came 1871. His father died and Martin began the tedious work of settling his father's estate. Was he aware of his father's financial morass? Whether he knew or not, he soon was immersed in bills presented for settlement. Typical of the time Martin and Susanna's family grew larger about every two years and they added another in September 1871. Now Martin was farming, settling an estate with more liabilities than assets, comforting his mother who was bereft of her companion of nearly fifty years, and coming home to a household with five children under seven, one of them a newborn. The worst was yet to come. Martin buried his mother in August 1874 with his father's estate still unsettled. Susanna was newly pregnant with Irvin. Six months later, February 1875, Martin sold 2/3 of the family farm distributing the proceeds to the three legatees of his mother's will, bought out his siblings' shares of the widow's 1/3, and presented his final report to the court. His respite was brief. In April Susanna died a few days after bearing her sixth child, Irvin. By the first of September Irvin was gone, too. In one year Martin lost his mother, his wife, and a son. Martin needed help and he did not waste any time finding a young woman to mother his brood. Eight months after Susanna's death, 4 January 1876, Martin married Celia Belden who at 20 became the stepmother of five children, ages five to twelve. A year later Celia gave birth to Eva, her first child, Martin's seventh. Celia's oldest stepchild, Sierra Nevada, was old enough to be a great help to her stepmother, and the family followed its growth trajectory, adding children. In 1880 Martin's three boys were already working on the farm which was a catalyst for Martin's buying ten adjoining acres in 1885. To purchase this property Martin paid $900 in cash and assumed a $2, 080 mortgage. Unknown to Martin, the U. S. economy was entering a downward spiral, making it a risky time to acquire a mortgage. Crop prices eroded year by year. In June 1893 banks began closing and the financial panic of 1893 rippled across the land. That same month Martin turned to his son Leander and his son-in-law Francis M. Miller for help, and they assumed the $2,000 mortgage. Two years later Martin recovered enough to resume the mortgage with Francis and Leander signing quit claims in February 1895. However, Martin had miscalculated and when he couldn't pay the mortgage, Connecticut Mutual Life foreclosed. The sheriff sold the acreage to the highest bidder for $2,554.41. This difficulty paled in comparison to Martin's next problem. Any father would be devastated to find that his daughter had been molested. To learn that a family member was responsible for the reprehensible deed must have been crushing. Eva, Martin and Celia's oldest child, with her father as "next friend," brought suit against her brother-in-law Francis M. Miller in the Miami County Circuit Court, September Term, 1895, claiming he had molested her. The suit was dismissed with the implication that Francis's stature in his county was such that no charges would be entertained. So Eva and her father took the case to Wabash County Circuit Court, asking for a change of venue. Whether Eva insisted they try again or Martin persisted seeking redress for the crime is not known, but the venue change was granted. On 24 February 1896, all parties signed an agreement acknowledging that Francis M. Miller made a settlement with Eva and paid the court costs. Francis was married to Eva's half-sister Rosa and they had no children. In her complaint to the Miami Court, Eva affirmed that she was under the age of 21 and that from 13 on she was afflicted with a "nervous disorder known as hysterical mania." She said that although this affected her physical health, leaving her unable to do heavy work, her mind was unaffected. She had been under the "tender care of her parents," and attended school. At 17 "by reason of the straightened circumstances of her parents," she had to support herself, so she sought a license to teach in the Miami schools. This was 1894 when Martin had such financial difficulty that Francis and Leander took over his mortgage. Eva went to live with her sister and brother-in-law Francis who, ever helpful, promised to care for her as a father. He loaned her money to attend the nearby Normal School and promised to find her a teaching position in a school near the Millers for the 1894-1895 school year. His solicitous attitude earned her trust and that of her family. She looked upon him as "a safe guide and counsellor in all the affairs of life." In December and January this man of thirty-eight "for the purpose of gratifying his lust, declared his love for her...and she was ... reduced to a condition of concubinage.[sic]" Now she declared that she was unable to find honorable employment in the public schools and asked for damages of $15,000 dollars. There is no record of the amount of the settlement that Francis made to Eva in 1896, nor is there a record of Rosa Miller's reaction to this betrayal. It does not appear that Rosa left Francis and in 1900, a girl of thirteen is in their household, listed as a "foster daughter." A hundred years later one can only wonder at the arrangement. Eva did secure a teaching position as she was so employed in 1900 in Whitley, another county adjoining Wabash and she married that November in nearby Porter County. Martin and his family weathered this event only to be stunned by another tragedy in 1908. Martin and Celia's daughter Grace had married Edward Quick in 1897. On Thursday 17 September 1908 the headline in the Wabash Plain Dealer screamed "Ed Quick Murdered in Night By Burglar." The paper reported a burglar entered the Quick home in Michigan City [Indiana] soon after midnight which awakened Ed. When Ed roused out of bed, the burglar shot him and fled. Ed Quick was a guard at the Michigan City, Indiana, prison, so immediate speculation pinned the blame on some recently released convict. Friday's paper announced funeral services for Saturday, the 19th, at the First Methodist Church and added "there is no credence placed in the theory that death was caused by a convict or escaped convict." There were no other details of the crime. Two years later Grace lived in Fort Wayne with her parents and two brothers Harry and Clyde. They were all employed: Martin was a teamster, Celia was an operator at the Princess Manufacturing Company, and Grace was a seamstress in a clothing store. Brothers Harry and Clyde, Martin's youngest children, were respectively, a truck driver and a "feeder" at a box factory. They all lived at 201 Second Street. In spite of the 1910 Fort Wayne directory listing them all in the same household, only Martin, Celia, Grace, and Grace's daughter Pauline are listed together on the 1910 census. They are at the 201 address and they have a boarder who may occupy a room vacated by the brothers. Perhaps indicative of continuing financial difficulties, the 73 year old Martin was still a teamster and the family was supplementing their income by taking in a boarder. Grace was now a saleslady in a clothing store. She most likely not only sold clothes, but altered them as well. Children of Martin V. Drollinger and Susanna Jane Sprowl all born in Wabash County, Indiana, were as follows: i. NEVADA DROLLINGER, born 23 May 1864, died 17 April 1894 in Wabash County, Indiana. ii. ROSA E. 11437 | I28019 | Drollinger | Mary (Molly) | 10 Oct 1763 | 1830 | 0 | There appears to be 2 Mary Trollingers. This was probably caused by the German naming custon. The first name was a spiritual name like a biblical name. The second name was more of a secular name and that is the name the person would be know as through out their life. Maria or Mary being a common name. Since the children of Mary and John Huffman were born at a time that overlaps the Wall children, this would support the idea of two Marys. Gordon L Drollinger Early Adventures on the Western Waters, vol II, Mary B. Kegley and F.B. Kegley, page 344 "At one time it was believed that Mary Trollinger married first Adam Wall and second John Huffman, but this is not the case. There appears to be two Mary Trollingers, the one married to Huffman, the other single at the time the deeds were written. (1804 when Jacob Henry's estate was settled) See also vol I p 279. |

I am looking for information about a Joseph Little and a Mary D(r)ellinger. Joseph was thought to have been from Pennsylvania and would have been born around 1850 or earlier... and Mary may have been from Iowa or Indiana, and born around the same time. Maybe she too was from Pennsylvania... not sure. I can't seem to find anything about their parents, so i'm hoping this will help. Joseph and Mary had a son named Arthur Melvin Little, who was born in 1870, Tipton, Iowa. Arthur married Lucy Hanks, and they moved to Colorado, where they had my Great-Grandfather Burrell Little(1896) and his sister Marjorie Little Harris. Burrell married Lydia Carlquist in Oregon, and they had Robert Gordon Little, my grandfather. If you have any information, it would be greatly appreciated if you could pass your information along... I am very much an amateur at this... thanks! christinalittle1984@gmail.com see daughter Nevada's marriage for evidence 1880 United States Federal Census Name: Mary Little Age: 50 Birth Year: abt 1830 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Home in 1880: Red Oak, Cedar, Iowa Race: White Gender: Female Relation to Head of House: Wife Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Joseph Little Father's Birthplace: Pennsylvania Mother's Birthplace: Pennsylvania |

So we must note her parentage is speculative and needs a lot of work. 2 Oct 2017 Gordon L.
