Notes:
As a Presbyterian, he took a prominent part in the reorganization and
rebuilding of the New Dublin Presbyterian Church in 1833. He built the
old Trolinger place, an old long log house, with each room opening on the
outside. It was located just east of the town of Dublin, and was rebuilt
in 1886.

He owned several thousand acres east of Dublin. The property included
the Coffee Pot Farm, the "Old Trolinger Place," and the Elliott Place.

On 11 October 1840 he died at the "Old Trolinger Place," and was buried
in the Trolinger (now Dublin) Cemetery. His wife survived him until 12
October 1869.

His will was made 28 September 1832 and probated 5 November 1840
(Montgomery County Will Book 1, p 1).
I, John Trolinger Sr., of Montgomery County do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following.

First I desire that all the perishable part of my estate be immediately sold after my decease and out of the monies arriving there from, all my just debts and funeral be paid.

Second I give to my wife, Elizabeth one-third part of of the balance of my estate.

Thirdly I give to my son Henry Trolinger my lands in New Bern where he now resides, it being in several different surveys with all adjoining, the whole containing about six hundred acres, to him and his heirs forever, with this reserve, that my half sister Elizabeth Lincos is to have and enjoy that part where she now lives, known by the name of the Coffee Pot Place during her natural life if she continues to live on it and no longer, nor is she permitted to sell or transfer her life time Estate in said piece of land to any other person but to Henry Trollinger or his assigns. I also give to the said Henry Trollinger a good title to a negroe girl named Deniss which he now has possession of, also my personal property which I have given him.

Fourth I give to my son, John Trollinger, all the lands where I now reside, it being in several different surveys, the whole containing about four hundred and fifty acres, to him and his heirs forever in exchange of some land having taken place between Stephen Trinkle and myself. If conveyances should not be made by us in my lifetime, the same is to be done by the said Stephen Trinkle and my son John Trollinger agreeing to the agreement between Stephen Trinkle and myself as aforesaid. And I have sold to Martin Elliott that place whereon he now lives. If I fail in making him a conveyance of the same in my life time, it is to be confirmed agreeably to a verbal agreement between us, fixing the line as agreeing on between us which is to run parallel with a new fence made by the said Martin Elliott. I also give to my son John Trollinger a negroe girl named Hannah which he now has in his possession and any other property which I have or may give him possession of in my life time.

Fifth The balance of my estate both real and personal I give to my daughters Sally Trinkle, Polly Elliott, Elizabeth Jordan, Phoebe Shufflebarger and Elizabeth Trollinger to them and their heirs forever in an equal division of said property between them. Due respect is to be paid advances I have or may in my life time make unto them, so that all are to (be) made equal.

And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my sons Henry Trollinger and John Trollinger and my son in law Michael Jordan Executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills or testaments by me heretofore made.

Notes: John Trolinger was born at Haw River, North Carolina in 1771. Early in the Revolutionary War his father, Jacob Henry Trolinger, bought a large tract of land in Montgomery County, now Pulaski County, Virginia. The family moved to Virginia shortly afterward. On the property was a salt peter cave where they mined salt peter and made gun powder for the Continental Army. Late in the War the family moved back to North Carolina. When a division of the property was made, Henry, John's eldest brother, received land in North Carolina and John, that in Pulaski County, Virginia. John Trolinger married Elizabeth Burris at Lynchburg, Virginia, 30 December 1792. She was born in 1776 and died in 1869. John Trolinger died near Dublin, Virginia, in 1842.

38358 I962  Trolinger  John   1771  11 Oct 1840  Does your German family tree seem to be overloaded with Johanns and Marias? German children were given two names. Boys commonly were baptized with the first name Johannes (or Johann, often abbreviated Joh). German girls were baptized Maria, Anna or Anna Maria. This tradition started in the Middle Ages.

So a family could have five boys with the first name Johann. You can see the potential for confusion until you understand that the first name doesn?t mean a thing.

This is because German boys almost always were baptized with the first name Johannes (or Johann, abbreviated Joh). German girls were baptized Maria, Anna or Anna Maria. (This tradition started in the Middle Ages.) This means a family could (and commonly did) have five boys with the first name Johann. You can see the high potential for confusion until you understand that the first name doesn?t mean a thing.

Second Naming Tradition
The second name, known as the Rufname, along with the surname is what would be used in marriage, tax, land and death records.

So in a family with boys Johann Friedrich, Johann Peter, Johann Daniel, etc., the children would be called by (and recorded in documents as as) Friedrich, Peter and Daniel. Usually, the name Johannes in these records marked a ?true John? who would continue to be so identified.

By the 19th century, more Germans gave their children three names. Again, typically only one of the middle names was used throughout the person?s life. Roman Catholics often used saints? names, while most Protestant groups also included names from the Old Testament or even nonChristian mythology.

Nicknames
Another naming tradition involves nicknames, often called Kurzformen. In English, most nicknames are created by dropping the last syllable of the given name (for example, Christoper and Christine become ?Chris?). Germans, however, often shorten a given name by dropping the first part of it. It?s important to note that these familiar forms are used in church or other records, even though by today?s standards we might expect full or formal names to be used.

Some of the many examples (using more authentic but understandable German spellings) are:

Nicklaus = Klaus
Sebastian = Bastian
Christophel = Stophel
Christina = Stin or Stina
Katharina = Trin
Note that these familiar forms are used in church or other records, even though by today?s standards we might expect formal names to be used.

Nothing else found in records to support Widmer as a middle name. Plus one would expect to see the initial W. on the gravestone if not the middle name. GLD 9 Nov 2022.

In a book I purchased I found an obituary for a James T. Trolinger,age 91, of Pulaski, VA. It is VERY lengthy, but here is the pertinent genealogy info: "Mr. Trolinger was a son of John and Mary Wygal Trolinger. April 8, 1886 he married Mary E. King and to this union the following children were born: John Edwin Trolinger, Henry Lewis Trolinger, William Pierce Trolinger, William Pierce Trolinger, Ellen King Trolinger, and twin girls who died at birth.
He is survived by one son, Henry Lewis Trolinger, of Johnson City, Tenn., one daughter, Mrs. Walter Price, Pulaski, and four grandchildren, Mrs. Stanyarne Little of Johnson City, Tenn., Mrs. R.J. Waugh, Pulaski, James T. Trolinger, Elizabethton, Tenn., and Lewis S. Price, Pulaski." The article also states "He was born and reared east of Dublin. His father, John T. Trolinger, named that town, andjoined with Stephen Trinkle, grandfather of former governor E. Lee Trinkle in donating the railway station site, and he was 12 when the first train ran to that stop." The article names numerous pallbearers and flower bearers, with many famiy names included. There is no date on the article, but based on articles on the backside, I think the year of death would be 1935. If interested in a copy, please contact me.

When in doubt go to original sources if possible. Family trees as well as US and International marriage records should be used as guide lines not as stone cold facts. One never knows what level of scholarship the person who put out this data has.

Dear Mike Freels,
I'm hoping you or someone you know, may be able to help me.
I am related to John A. M. Trolinger who is buried in the Pratt Cemetery (ref his Findagrave.com link below).
The photo of John's headstone shows that the death date inscription is buried, just out of view.
I would sure like to know what that death inscription actually says in order to properly determine when John actually died.
Hopefully, because of your position, you know of someone who could visit his grave site, remove some of the obscuring debris, etc., that is blocking John's death inscription and take another photo of the headstone showing the complete inscription and then submitting it again to Findagrave.com.
And, if you or that person could ALSO email me letting me know what John's death inscription says, I would be most grateful.
As you know, it is important that we preserve these images and data for the sake of posterity. And, unless we take proper steps to preserve it and weather takes its inevitable toll on these headstones, valuable information may be lost forever.
I hope to hear from you soon!
Thank you and thank you for the invaluable service you provide!
Best Wishes!

There is a sort of glamour cast around those brave ones who dared to come into a wild and unpeopled country, save for the savages and the wild beasts, and conquer the wilderness so that it might yield food and shelter for their loved one and also for their posterity. Mr. Trolinger is indeed proud of his sturdy ancestors, who were the early settlers of Henry County and laid the foundation for its broad fertile farms and prosperous institutions. John Cecil Trolinger was born July 26, 1863, in Leesville, Missouri, the son of Dr. John Philip Trolinger who was born in Springfield township, February 7, 1835, and died in Benton County, January 25, 1885; and Martha Ann (Nichols) Trolinger, who was born in Lafayette County, Missouri, May 31, 1840, and died February 10, 1891. They were the parents of eight children as follow: William H., of Honey Creek township; John Cecil, with whom this sketch deals; James H., Welch, Oklahoma; Mrs. Alta C. Shrum of Frederick, Oklahoma; Mrs. Martha A. Gilcrest, residing in Benton County, Missouri; Archie N., Quapaw, Oklahoma; Mrs. Allie May Fewell, deceased; Samuel W., at Dillon, Montana. The father of John Cecil Trolinger, who was Dr. John Philip Trolinger received his medical education in the Missouri Medical College at St. Louis, Missouri, and practiced medicine in St. Clair County until the Civil War, when he removed to Leesville, Missouri, where he practiced until a few years before his death. He moved across the line into Benton County and lived but a few years after his removal. Doctor Trolinger was the son of Henry Trolinger and Attelia Cecil Trolinger. The former was born in Virginia and came to Missouri in 1829, locating in Henry County in 1832. He entered land in Springfield township until the land was surveyed by the Government, when he, in 1837, filed on the land, becoming its legal owner. He was married in Virginia to Attelia Cecil, daughter of Philip Cecil, who was a very early settler of Springfield township. Philip Cecil owned a very valuable violin, which made music during the long lonely hours of pioneer life which is highly cherished and is now in the hands of his grandson, John Cecil Trolinger. The joys of companionship were rare in those early days, at least in the thirties, when the neighbors were from twelve to twenty miles apart. "But where there is a will there is a way" and the young people of those early days thought nothing of trips on horseback to visit one another. Mrs. Attelia Cecil Trolinger, in Springfield township, neighbored with Mrs. Fields of Fields Creek township and also with the Sweeney family in Clinton township. Those were indeed the days when friendships were cherished and their long rides on horseback were forgotten in the joys of the moment. The little children were brought also on these long neighborly calls and enjoyed them as much as their elders. John Cecil Trolinger was educated in the public schools of the county and attended Hooper's Institute, Clarksburg, Missouri, one year. He farmed in Springfield township until 1908. In 1896 he was elected County Assessor and served his county for four years. In 1907 he came to Clinton and was in the employ of the Elliston Insurance Company until his acceptance of the bookkeeper's chair in the Clinton National Bank, where he is now Assistant Cashier. He is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and also a stanch Democrat. In the Mason Lodge he is an active member of the Blue Lodge Works. February 14, 1888, was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Trolinger and Miss Laura L. Magers, the daughter of Desha and Icy (Broyles) Magers, the former a native of Kentucky, and the latter born in Macon County, Missouri, and laid to rest in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Mrs. Trolinger was born in Macon County, Missouri, and she with her husband are the parents of two daughters: Leila, a graduate of Clinton High School, Warrensburg State Normal School, and is now at the University of Colorado; Mallie, the wife of C. E. Brodie, resides at Washington, D. C., but is now at Dallas, Texas, with her husband who is in the United States Aviation Corps, located at that place. Mrs. Brodie is also a graduate of Clinton High School and the Warrensburg State Normal. Mr. Trolinger is justly proud of his antecedents and looks with pride upon their lives as they wove the woof of life in the community. The first brick chimney to be built in Henry County is still upon the Cecil farm, built by the original owner. Also Mr. Cecil's will was the first be recorded upon the Henry County books.

As usual the spelling of the last name varies from single L to double L further compounding and confusing the tracing of his parents.

38392 I45649  Trolinger  John H. "Johnnie"  27 Jan 1889  30 Jan 1911  John's middle name is probably Henry after his father.

It appears that the informant on Johnnie's (John H. Trolinger 1889-1911) death certificate, "Jack" Radford, is Andrew Jackson "Jack" Radford who was born 2 Mar 1886 in or around Carroll. Reynolds, Missouri and whose parents are Isaiah (Izarah Radford per his headstone) and Margaret Radford. Isaiah's brother is Paton "Pate" Radford whose son is James Jefferson Radford who was married to Samantha Cordellia nee Turner who is the daughter of John Oliver Turner and Cathryn (Catherine) Trolinger. Cathryn's parents are Samuel Trolinger and Elizabeth Jane nee Gallaher. Cathryn's brother is John Henry Trolinger who appears to be the most likely father of John H. "Johnnie" Trolinger. All these people have ties to Reynolds County, Missouri where Johnnie passed away. It appears that Johnnie and Jack were probable friends both being about the same age and both single and both engaged in farming. They may have probably lived near each other. According to Johnnie's death certificate he had been ill for seven years, so perhaps Jack was also giving assistance to Johnnie. It is not known to this author what the state of Johnnie's health was dating back to his earlier childhood years. If Johnnie's health at that time was such that he needed assistance other than what his presumed parents could provide and as a result was living away from their home at the time of the 1900 Census that could serve as possible reason for Johnnie not being included with the rest of the family at that time. In the 1910 Census he is living with Dewitt and Calfernia Howell and it is not known to this author what their relationship was. It should be noted that John Henry Trolinger and Tyldiann also had a son, Thomas Monroe Trolinger, who was born 23 Dec 1889 the same year as Johnnie. Johnnie was born 27 Jan 1889. Even though they were both born in the same year of 1889, there was still approximately eleven months separating their births providing adequate time to still be possible siblings. Johnnie's birth name being John H. Trolinger combined with all the above circumstantial evidence, it is this author's opinion that Johnnie is in all likelihood the son of John Henry Trolinger and wife, Tyldiann unless and until substantial evidence to the contrary surfaces.
