41952 I21424  Trollinger  M.  Abt 1848    It appears that James Trollinger and M. Trollinger (female) who are both identified as being two years of age in the 1850 Census are probable twins who both probably died as infants as they do not appear in any subsequent censuses. Living together in close quarters it is possible that siblings, Amanda, James and M. Trollinger may have all contracted and died from the same illness that may have killed them.

Benton County Sheriff's Office drops embezzlement investigation into former fire marshal who died in I-49 crash
A former Benton County fire marshal was being investigated for allegedly embezzling money from three local fire departments. He died in a crash on I-49 in July.
LOWELL, Ark. - New information has been uncovered into the death of a former Benton County fire marshal who died on the day he was asked to answer questions about embezzlement.

Marc Trollinger died in a fiery crash in July 2020 after his vehicle hit a concrete barrier along I-49 near Lowell.

In a report released Monday (Dec. 28), the Benton County Sheriff's Office accuses former volunteer Fire Chief Marc Trollinger of stealing thousands of dollars from bank accounts of the three departments where he was chief, including the Hickory Creek Fire Department (FD), HWY 94 East FD and Pleasure Heights FD.

"Marc and I had been friends for quite a long time leading up to this, so it was quite the shock to discover," Hickory Creek Fire Department Chief Eric Smith told 5NEWS.

Trollinger resigned from the three departments in Feb. 2020.

In June, while doing a routine audit, Chief Smith says he discovered purchases on the Hickory Creek Fire Department's accounts from Zales, travel websites and other purchases that were not authorized.

"We operate on such a small budget, to begin with. And we have to work hard to manage our finances," Chief Eric Smith said. "And for someone who had been integral in finances so long out here knew how hard to have the money we had to do what we do. Like I said, shocked doesn't even touch the feeling that all the firefighters have had when we discovered this."

The Benton County Sheriff's Office started an investigation and asked to meet up with Trollinger. When he didn't show up, it was discovered that Trollinger had died in a car crash.

Trollinger was the only person who had access to the three fire department bank accounts. Since his death, the investigation into embezzlement has been closed.

"We've taken steps to make sure it doesn't happen again. We've gotten more layers of security on our financial transactions," Chief Eric Smith said. "We've gone to two signatures on every check, we have multiple people on the bank accounts now so that lots of people can look at that."

The exact amount of money stolen from the three department's bank accounts is still something they are working to figure out, but Chief Smith believes it was more than $50k.

It's unclear at the time if Trollinger embezzled any other funds from Benton County agencies.

"Benton County has been made aware of the potential fraudulent activities conducted by Mr. Trollinger prior to his resignation as Fire Marshall," Benton County Judge Barry Moehring said. "For the most part, these activities occurred within the volunteer departments that were overseen by Mr. Trollinger. To the extent that Benton County funds may have been involved, we have cooperated fully with Arkansas Legislative Audit and the Benton County Sheriff's Office. Until those reports are issued, we will not know if any county funds were involved in any fraudulent activities."

Trollinger had a 25-year career in fire service.

41998 I959  Trollinger  Margaret   Abt 1755  Bef 1840  John Sarver and Margaret Trollinger
From notes of Janet King
John Sarver was born about 1744 in Pennsylvania to Casper Sarver a recent Swiss Emigrant. John was fluent in German and passed his knowledge of the language down at least three generations. Casper Sarver probably found land in Pennsylvania scarce and over priced so moved the family to Virginia sometime before the American Revolution.
John Sarver married about 1770 in Virginia to Margaret Peggy Trollinger daughter of Jacob Trollinger and Anna Barbara Widmer. Peggy's parents were emigrants from Germany. It is believed she was born in Pennsylvania ca 1755 and moved to North Carolina as a child. The family eventually settled in Virginia where Jacob Trollinger owned and operated a salt peter mine where he made gunpowder for the American Revolution.
John and his brother Casper were part of Captain Taylor's militia for the Craig's Creek area of Botetourt County set up the 31 August 1782 The unit consisted of 43 men for the purpose of carrying into execution the state's quota of troops to serve in the United States army for the term of three years or during the War. A public service claim dated 30 July 1783 shows John Sarver was reimbursed for a blanket he furnished to the militia.
John Sarver was living on 189 acres of land south of Craig's Creek adjoining his father in 1772. The 1785 tax list for Botetourt County reported eight souls in John's household including one dwelling and one outbuilding.
John's father Casper Sarver died in Botetourt County, Virginia in 1782 leaving John the Still, Still vessels and the Bible. Casper split his farm between his other two sons Casper and Henry Sarver.
John was appointed a constable for Botetourt in 1791 and in 1800 was taxed for one male over 21 years, four slaves and eight horses. In the spring of 1808, John left Virginia and moved to middle Tennessee. His wife and most of his children accompanied him. John purchased 472 acres of land in Sumner County, Tennessee for $1416.00 from James Wilson. His land was located on the waters of the middle fork of Drake's Creek.
John Sarver was one of the first settlers in what would become the Fairfield Community built around the Fairfield Methodist Church. John and Peggy Sarver were living in Sumner County in 1830, according to the census he's between 80 and 90 and she's between 70 and 79. They owned eight slaves. In 1840, John's age is recorded as 100 plus. Peggy is missing and presumed dead. John now owned 17 slaves. On the 2 February 1842 John's heirs sold their interest in his 272 acres plantation. John was living but apparently unable to maintain his estate. According to a family tradition, John died at the age of 104 years old from drinking dye he mistook for whiskey. He is thought to be buried in the Sarver family cemetery located on his son Jeremiah's Belvidere Plantation in the Fairfield Community located in upper Sumner County, Tennessee.

Sarver (Surber, Sarber, Sarvour) Family
It is believed that the Casper SARVER of Botetourt Co., VA was the same person as the Casper SURBER who was born 5 March 1719, married to Barbara MERK on 14 March 1741, left to the American Colonies from Oberwenigen Switzerland on 18 April 1741. They possibly lived in PA before appearing in VA 1779.
Early settlers in Botetourt County, VA included Gasper, Henry and John SARVER who owned land on Craigs' Creek in the 1770's, 80's and 1790's.
Casper SARVER died in Botetourt Co., VA and left will probated in February 1782. He left personal property to wife Elizabeth and divided land between sons, Henry and Casper. To his son John he left "my still and still vessels and Bible." The will of his widow, Elizabeth SARVER, who was evidently a second wife, in 1787 left all of her property to Julia WEBB, Sr.
Henry Sarver, son of Casper, was born in 1742. He was in Botetourt Co., VA in the 1780's, in Orange Co., NC in 1805 and moved to Sumner Co., TN in 1806. His wife was Thamer HALLE whom his descendants say was from Alsace-Lorraine. She was born 1758, died 1817 and was buried in Old Fountain Head cemetery in Sumner Co., TN. Henry died 14 Dec. 1827 and was buried in same cemetery as were five of their seven children. One son moved to Green Co., Indiana and a daughter moved to Iowa. Many of their children and grandchildren were active members of the Fountain Head Methodist Church.
Casper SARVER, Jr. was born ca. 1743, was married 21 Feb. 1780 in Botetourt Co., VA to Susanna MILLER. When he died in Botetourt Co., VA in 1828, his heirs were living in Giles County and Botetourt County.
My fourth great grandfather, John SARVER, son of Casper SARVER, was born ca. 1744/45. He lived in Botetourt Co., VA before moving to Sumner County, TN where he bought land in March 1808. His wife's name is UNKNOWN but she was living in 1830 when census shows 1 male 80 - 90, 1 female 70 - 80, 8 slaves. In 1840 he is shown as 1 male "100 and upwards" with 17 slaves.
Public records show that John was still living in Feb. 1842 but is not found in 1850. His great grandson, "Mr. Alf" SARVER (1852 - 1948) told me that John was German and never learned to speak English well. He said John died at age 105 from drinking dye which he thought was whisky. Another source says he died at age 106.
John SARVER's seven children were:
1. Samuel SARVER, Sr. who was first married in 1791 to Mary ROWE and had six children. In 1813 still in Botetourt Co., VA he married Polly TRACY. In 1842 he lived in Giles Co., VA. His six children lived in Texas, VA, Missouri and two came to Sumner Co., TN. His youngest son, Jeremiah SARVER, Jr. was born 1805, married Julia TILLER in 1825 in Giles Co., VA. They moved to Sumner County, TN in 1842 where he died 12 April 1881. He owned a store at Brackintown and was called "Virginia Jerry". He was designated Jr. to distinguish him from his uncle, called Jeremiah, Sr. Jeremiah Jr. and Julia had 13 children, several of whom stayed in Sumner County and some moved to Ill.
2. John SARVER, Jr. born 21 Feb. 1772, married to Mary SMITH in Botetourt Co., VA 10 June 1797, died in Allen Co., KY 21 Jan. 1848. Mary born 25 Aug. 1779, died after 1860. They had 10 children.
3. My third great grandmother, Elizabeth SARVER, was born ca. 1775 married 14 June 1796 in Botetourt Co., VA to Jeremiah BELL. They had four daughters born in VA and a son Patton BELL born 9 October 1808 in Sumner County. Jeremiah BELL died between Nov. 1818 and the 1820 census. They moved here to Sumner Co., TN with her parents and siblings.
4. Quinton SARVER lived in Sumner County, TN, where in 1832 he was appointed a constable. He died 1833, brother Jeremiah was administrator.
5. Mary "Polly" SARVER born 1785, died 1869. She was unmarried but adopted a daughter Isabella, who married James B. MEADOR. In 1850 Mary lived with them.
6. Jeremiah SARVER, Sr. was born 3 Oct. 1788 in VA married 7 Nov. 1810 in Sumner Co., TN to Margaret Ann "Peggy" OSBURN. They had only one child who lived to maturity, Alfred Gillespie SARVER, Sr., born 20 April 1814 married in 1834 to Adeline F. McKENDREE. Adeline died in the 1840's and in 1850, Jeremiah was married to Henrietta when he was 63, Henrietta was only 24. 1860 census shows Jeremiah 73, Henrietta 35. He died 13 Sept. 1867 and was buried in cemetery on farm later owned by his grandson, Alfred G. SARVER, Jr. "Mr. Alf" was born in 1852 and still lived in the house which he was born when I visited him in 1946 or 47.
7. Catherine SARVER born 1780/90 married 4 Dec. 1810 to John MANDRELL in Sumner Co., TN. In 1840 she sold interest in land to her brother, Jeremiah.
