He married Margaret Humes in 1922. She died in 1970. Surviving are a daughter, Gwendolyn E. Merry of Effingham; sisters, Mildred Allen, Virginia Kelley, Claire Rose, all of Portland, Ore; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. |

Vrooman were held Monday afternoon in the Grandstaff Funeral Home, Roann, with the Rev. William Sullivan and Dr. George Cartwright officiating. Burial was in Friends Cemetery at Wabash. Music was presented by Mrs. Willard West, organist, and Ward Vandegrift, soloist. The pallbearers were Will Guthrie, Ross Miller, Hugh Richardson, Lorin Tomlinson, Fayette Shoemaker and Von Williams. 2010 Feb 24 - Comments written by Marilou Vrooman Schaitbaum in 1982: Gloe married Vera Drollinger 1/28/1914. Gloe went to school through the 8th grade and Vera through the 9th grade. After they were married Gloe was for many years a tenant farmer both north and south of Wabash. Always had farm hands 6 or 8 at a time working time one farm hand lived with them. He often went to Oklahoma and Neb. to buy cattle and horses to breed, raise and sell. At one time he had 20+ Belgium horses to sell. In 1937 he bought his own 1st farm, 40 acres on S.R. 13 south of Wabash. He and relatives from Mich (Dawes) helped to build a house and barn on the 40 acres. Roger nixed the mud he says. IN 1936 they moved into the house. He owned 3 different farms after this, the last one being where Roger lives now, north of Roann. He had a liking for animals as he tells when he was a young boy, how he had taught their Fox terrier dog to climb the ladder up into the hay mow and to then jump down onto a pile of hay. Gloe loved to ice skate and play ball and at any family gathering was out there going strong. He was always in good physical health - hence he would bet you he could run faster than you or could expand his chest the fartherest and HE COULD. Even when Jim was in High School he could out run him. After we were all married and home for a dinner, you knew that sometime during the day he would challenge the fellows to a chest expansion contest. And always to play cards, euchre was the game - loved the game always. Besides being a farmer, from about 1938 to 1948 he also was in public office - Trustee of Wabash Co. He ran on the Republican ticket. For a few years - in between farms - he worked for Sears in the furniture dept. During the second WW he had a Victory Garden. This being the ground in between the horseshoe circle that he planted in rows in the shape of V's 0 in red, white and dark purple (blue) petunias. Also in the design of the American flag. His garden was different farm magazines and write-ups about his Victory Garden were featured. He was never rich, money wise, but had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back. He loved people - use to say - "I've dealt with all kinds of people and I can get along with anyone." Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wabash Friends Church. Pastor David Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel.
