47468 | I30233 | Wharton | Walter W. | 1 Jul 1833 | 28 Apr 1907 | 0 | "Walter Wharton, born in 1833, was the second oldest of Benjamin's sons. ...On August 6, 1862, he enlisted in Company I 83rd OVI. He was in a number of campaigns - Battle of Arkansas Post, siege and capture of Vicksburg, Battle of New Orleans, and Battle of Blakely, Alabama. He was discharged from Camp Dennison, Ohio in 1865. ...he never married... Walter Wharton, being an enthusiastic and loyal member of the gAR, planned elaborate memorial day ceremonies....ceremonies continued at Wharton's home which he had decorated quite festively for the occasion. Door frames and window frames were painted red, white, and blue as were the ig boulders which lined the edge of the yard... The last time Walter Wharton was able to celebrate in this fashion was on Sunday following Decoration Day, 1903. Over a hundred people came, and the events included a picnic feast for all. When he was no longer able to sponsor these events at his home, the ceremonies were held at Union Township Cemetery (Brookside Cemetery), where he was buried when he died in 1907 On a slight rise of the ground is a monument with a round marble cylinder lying sideways across the top. The American flag is etched on the side, or end, of the cylinder. This monument marks the grave of Walter W. Wharton, a Civil War veteran, who was quite patriotic and founded the Memorial Day ceremonies of Union Township. (Now West Chester Township). The wharton family had a flagpole placed by his grave. It was the first flagpole installed in the cemetery." - excerpt from A History of Union Township Butler County, Ohio by Virginia Shewalter. 1979 Walter served in the Civil War : CO I 83rd OVI residing next door to Benj. They love to travel, seeing sights in their motor home throughout the fifty states. They traveled extensively in Europe, tracing their family genealogy as a hobby that they shared. Jake loved the water and taking family and friends on boat rides on the Neuse River, the Pamlico Sound, and to Cape Lookout. Jake enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a quiet, behind-the-scenes kind of guy. You hardly ever knew he was around, and he loved the challenge of home ownership, always tinkering away making sure everything was working correctly. Wheeler of Apex; grandchildren, Bonita Jean Wheeler Medlin, Tracey Lynn Wheeler, Stephanie Denise Wheeler Taylor and husband Michael, John Michael Wheeler and wife Ashlee Ann and Meredith Kendall Wheeler; and great grandchildren; Joseph Gray Medlin, Hunter Elizabeth Medlin, Alexander Kline Mense, Zachary Cooper Mense, Michelle Cartlin Taylor and Sarah Adriance Taylor.
