47468 I30233  Wharton  Walter W.  1 Jul 1833  28 Apr 1907  "Walter Wharton, born in 1833, was the second oldest of Benjamin's sons. ...On August 6, 1862, he enlisted in Company I 83rd OVI. He was in a number of campaigns - Battle of Arkansas Post, siege and capture of Vicksburg, Battle of New Orleans, and Battle of Blakely, Alabama. He was discharged from Camp Dennison, Ohio in 1865.

...he never married...

Walter Wharton, being an enthusiastic and loyal member of the gAR, planned elaborate memorial day ceremonies....ceremonies continued at Wharton's home which he had decorated quite festively for the occasion. Door frames and window frames were painted red, white, and blue as were the ig boulders which lined the edge of the yard...

The last time Walter Wharton was able to celebrate in this fashion was on Sunday following Decoration Day, 1903. Over a hundred people came, and the events included a picnic feast for all. When he was no longer able to sponsor these events at his home, the ceremonies were held at Union Township Cemetery (Brookside Cemetery), where he was buried when he died in 1907

On a slight rise of the ground is a monument with a round marble cylinder lying sideways across the top. The American flag is etched on the side, or end, of the cylinder. This monument marks the grave of Walter W. Wharton, a Civil War veteran, who was quite patriotic and founded the Memorial Day ceremonies of Union Township. (Now West Chester Township). The wharton family had a flagpole placed by his grave. It was the first flagpole installed in the cemetery."

"The first Whartons to come to America did so before the American Revolution and settled in Sussex County Delaware. Benjamin Wharton and some of his brothers (Zadok was one) came to Union Township (WestChester Township) when Benjamin was 18. In 1821 he married Sarah Drullinger, whose father, Philip, was a very early Union Township settler near Port Union....

...Benjamin and Sarah Wharton has six sons and four daughters, three of whom died quite young. Those who reached maturity were Mary Jane,John, Walter W., Milton, Zadok, William P, and Parker...Walter, Mary Jane, and John never married. John died in 1870...Zadok and Milton moved to near Miamisburg and Parker went to Indiana. William received part of the farm and stayed.

William married Sarah and had three daughters - Elsie, Ida, and Mary Alice. Elsie died as a child. Mary Alice married Harvey Johnson and reared their daughter Eva at Mary Alice's family home. Eva Johnson married Charles Kline of West Chester. Ida married Elmer Gorsuch...they had a son Pearlie.."
...excerpts from A History of Union Township Butler County, Ohio by Virginia Shewalter 1979

"Zadok Wharton bought the tavern and then kept a store there for several years. The Centennial History of Butler Count, Ohio published in 1905, described him thus: "He was a quaint old character and wore a queue (pigtail) about fifteen inches long done up very artistically in ribbon." - excerpt from A History of Union Township Butler County Ohio by Virginia Shewalter 1979

47486 I28284  Wheeler  John Kenneth "Jake"  13 Oct 1927  27 Jun 2016  John "Jake" Kenneth Wheeler Jr., 88, of Wilmington, NC, passed away Monday, June 27, 2016 at The Commons at Brightmore in Wilmington.

A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel in Morehead City with Rev. Sabrenia Smallwood Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park with military honors.

Jake was employed at IBM for 30 years as an industrial engineer where he was involved in the dramatic growth of the company's footprint in the Research Triangle Park, in the 60's, 70's and 80's. While at IBM he obtained his Master's Degree from Syracuse University.

He and his wife Sarah established Neuse Realty in New Bern, specializing in properties in Fairfield Harbor where they lived. They love to travel, seeing sights in their motor home throughout the fifty states. They traveled extensively in Europe, tracing their family genealogy as a hobby that they shared.

Jake loved the water and taking family and friends on boat rides on the Neuse River, the Pamlico Sound, and to Cape Lookout.

Jake enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a quiet, behind-the-scenes kind of guy. You hardly ever knew he was around, and he loved the challenge of home ownership, always tinkering away making sure everything was working correctly.

Jake is survived by his sons, John J. Wheeler and wife Becky of Wilmington and Walter R. Wheeler of Apex; grandchildren, Bonita Jean Wheeler Medlin, Tracey Lynn Wheeler, Stephanie Denise Wheeler Taylor and husband Michael, John Michael Wheeler and wife Ashlee Ann and Meredith Kendall Wheeler; and great grandchildren; Joseph Gray Medlin, Hunter Elizabeth Medlin, Alexander Kline Mense, Zachary Cooper Mense, Michelle Cartlin Taylor and Sarah Adriance Taylor.
