Ensign; to Commander - Air Service seventeen years. U.S. Passport Applications, 1795-1925 about Henry Barton Cecil Name: Henry Barton Cecil Birth Date: 17 Feb 1888 Birth Place: New River Tennessee Age: 37 Gender: Male Passport Issue Date: 24 Sep 1924 Passport Includes a Photo: Yes Residence: New River Tennessee Father Name: Beaty Cecil Father's Birth Location: Tennessee Father's Residence: New River Tennessee In 1916, He became a licensed naval airplane pilot -Navy pilot's license # 42 WW1 1910, Graduated US Naval Academy HENRY BARTON CECIL (188-1933), Navy Air Force in World War I, Commander CECIL lost his life in the dirigible "Akron" disaster of April 4, 1933. Commander in U S Navy. Lost at sea in the Airship Akron disaster. The Akron was a dirigible which went down off the coast of New Jersey during an electrical storm. There were 76 men aboard. Only 3 survived. Bart was a guest on the flight. The Akron disaster was likely the result of poor command decisions relating to weather, navigation, and ship handling. While it is possible that Akron?s tail was driven into the sea by a strong downdraft, it is likely that Captain Frank McCord simply flew his ship into the water. McCord was flying too low for conditions, and he may not have taken his ship?s 785-foot length into account while attempting to climb out of a downdraft; with the nose of the ship raised sharply to climb, the Akron?s tail may have pivoted into the ocean as the result of poor handling. Cecil Field near Jacksonville, Florida was named in his honor. |
