5855 I23357  Conrad  Paul Michael "Mike"  19 Feb 1941    Paul Michael "Mike" Conrad
1941 - 2013
Early Life: Mike was born February 19, 1941l in Inglewood, California, son of Paul Francis and Phyllis Gay Duliner Conrad. He grew up a volleyball-playing beach bum. In high school he was a champion wrestler and a tank on the football field.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: Mike played for LaVell Edwards at BYU and was invited to play for the Dallas Cowboys. But he had just joined The Church pf Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and on August 10, 1963, married Penne Dianne Freebairn in the Manti Utah Temple. He decided that pro football wasn't the environment he wanted to raise a family in. So Mike moved his little family back to Manhattan Beach, California. where he had grown and became a school teacher, coach, and lifeguard. He was awarded district teacher of the year and was loved by thousands of students. But it was his family who learned the most from his wisdom. Mike taught hard work and to do your duty. He taught that 80 percent of success is just showing up and to be on time while you're at it. He taught his family to be 100 percent honest in all you do and to always assume the best intentions in others even when they let you down, to listen to people without judging, to treat everyone you meet as if they were family. He treated Penne like a queen. He taught the love of reading, learning, and spent his whole life learning, overcoming dyslexia to earn a master's degree in history. He served ten years as the director of California Pools for the Handicapped and learned sign language so he could better communicate with the autistic children he served. He taught to open your door and your heart to anyone, anytime; to love and serve the Lord. He spent 15 years as a stake missionary working with Cambodians and young single adults in Long Beach. And he taught to freeze your desserts and eat them later, they have no calories after midnight! Rise and shout, the Cougars are out! We're celebrating the life of one of their most loyal sons. Paul Michael "The Tank" Conrad burst through the veil on July 25, 2013. Mike's motto for living: "Carry on!"
Family Message: "Mike was always there for anyone who needed him. But now he's off to serve his mission with Penne in the Spirit World, because she needed him most. But we'll miss him."
Survived By: His siblings: Dennis Conrad, Peggy Conrad, and Jeff (and Bernice) Conrad; his children: Shoni Conrad, Chad (and Stacy) Conrad, Guy (and Janna) Conrad, Lance (and Tanya) Conrad. His beloved grandchildren: Christian (and Amanda), Lydia, Samuel, Jacob, Keely, Koby, Reese, Tessa, Megan, Sage, Lacy, Seth, Sierra, Kianna, and Faith. His great grandson: William.

5860 I11631  Conrey  Mary Ellen Cecilia  19 Oct 1919  6 Feb 1999  I knew Cecilia. She was my landlady years back in Cincinnati. She was starting to suffer from Alzheimer's Disease and everyone moved out of the building she owned and managed. I was the only one left and she had no one else to talk to so she told me a lot about her husband Gabe and their son Chip. Just wondered if you knew any of them.

Mr. Gordon,

I appreciate you taking time to write me back very much.

I was living with Cecilia in her and Gabe's old apt. building in Cincinnati when you spoke with her in 1995. I had to sometimes help her get telephone and utilities turned back on when she forgot to pay bills which is why I know her birth date was 10/19/1919. The Conrey's came up from Oklahoma in January 1996 and she began to live in a nursing home from then until she passed away from Alzheimer's in Feb. 1999.

It's not really that important, but Cecilia once told me her real name was "Mary Ellen." Do you happen to have anything in your notes about that? My grandmother's name was Mary Ellen and she also passed away from Alzheimer's in Feb. 1999 so I was just curious if you might have anything to confirm my recollection.

Grant was born to Heber James and Jetta Cook March 24th, 1934 in Springville, Utah. He graduated Springville High School in 1952 and joined the United States Navy shortly thereafter. After his initial training he served on the USS Shangri-La aircraft carrier and was discharged in 1956. While still in the Navy he married his sweetheart Grace Drollinger from Payson, Utah in 1953. They established their first home in Seaside, California and after his military discharge they established their permanent home in Payson in 1956.

Grant is survived by his four children: Darcy Lee (Mark) Miner of Highland, Utah; Kimberly Ann (Max) Cameron of Payson, Utah; Dayne G (Hui-Young) Cook of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Christian Dale Cook of Payson, Utah; his brother Ron (Pat) Cook, of Prescott, Arizona and a sister-in-law, Virginia Ewell of Vernal, Utah. He also temporarily leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Grant was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in various positions including as a member of the Stake Presidency, Bishop, multiple Bishoprics, Gospel Doctrine Instructor, Ward Clerk, Counselor and Teacher in several auxiliaries. He also served two service missions, one in the Church Employment Center, and the other at the Home Storage Center.

In addition to expertly managing the Drollinger farm in his spare time, Grant was a professional educator at heart. He taught psychology, physics and math. He then progressed into counseling and administration and ended his professional career as the Dean of Student Services at Utah Valley State College. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him, but his Christ-like service and stellar example will forever light our hearts and minds.

5892 I24161  Cook  Harriett E.  Abt 1839  2 Feb 1924  Because Harriett carries the middle initial of 'E' and has a daughter named Eliza, it appear that Harriett's middle name MAY be Eliza or Elizabeth.

Harriett's birth date varies wildly from document to document. The only birth date that seems most likely is about 1839 as it is recorded in her 1870 Census. She herself was probably the one furnishing the answers to the census taker's questions. Additionally, 1839 also appears to be reasonable since her daughter, Caroline was born about 1855 which means Harriett would have been roughly 16 years old at the time.

Listed as Harriett Cook in her daughter's death certificate.

According to the 1910 Census, Harriett was the mother of six children with five still living.

Missouri bushwhacker William Clarke Quantrill crosses the border and leads a raid on Olathe, Kansas. The 140 guerillas enter town, blockade exit points, and march against 125 soldiers who stand in line in defense. Quantrill's Raiders use their horses as shields as they advance with pistols drawn, and all but one soldier surrenders. That one resister is shot, along with some number of civilians. After looting the town, Quantrill returns to Missouri with Lieutenant Colonel John T. Burris in pursuit. Over the ensuing weeks, Burris pursues Quantrill through Jackson, Cass, Johnson, and Lafayette Counties, recapturing weapons and supplies but failing to capture Quantrill.

William Quantrill (1837-1865) was a Confederate sympathizer and guerrilla fighter during the Civil War, roaming the plains of Kansas, which had joined the Union as a free state in 1861, and Missouri, a slave-owning state. He was not recognized by the Confederacy as an officer, and many of his men, including Frank and Jesse James, and Cole and Jim Younger, became outlaws after the war ended. The anti-slavery forces were known as jayhawkers, and many of them were equally predatory in their treatment of Kansas settlers.

Break

Confederate raider William Quantrill led his band of 140 men out of Missouri and into Kansas. His purpose was to terrorize the citizens who were Union supporters and to resupply his troops. On the night of September 6-7, 1862, they rode into the small town of Olathe near the Kansas-Missouri border and attacked the town. Men broke into houses, stealing money and valuables along with another more unusual item-photos of pretty young women. Quantrill was known to have a fondness for these, and few were left in towns after his raids.

One of Quantrill's main targets, of course, was horses. A resident of nearby Spring Hill who was caught up in the Olathe raid had the courage to protest the taking of his horse. Hiram Blanchard tried to pull his bay mare away from a raider and paid for his bravery with his life. The raider blew off the top of Blanchard's head with his shotgun, leaving the bloody body in the street. Two more men were shot and killed by Quantrill's men before the troop galloped off to the east. Pack horses, loaded down with loot, and stolen horses followed along behind.

The next morning, Olathe residents discovered more horror. The bodies of three young men, recent enlistees in the 12th Kansas Infantry, were found. Frank Cook and the Judy brothers, John and James, had been shot down in cold blood by Quantrill's men. Frank Cook was taken from his father-in-law's house and made a prisoner. His body was found not far away in a ravine with two bullet holes in his chest and his head crushed by a cannon ball. The raiders ransacked the Judy house, taking the enlistees as prisoners. John Judy's wife headed for her neighbor's as soon as the raiders had left, but she heard the gunshots that killed her husband and brother-in-law as she hurried along the road. John Judy was shot in the eye and twice in the chest, and his brother was shot once in the face and once in the chest. The bodies of the Judys were found on the nearby Millikan farm.

Although the attack on Olathe was largely overshadowed by Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kansas, on August 21, 1863, where 180 men and boys were killed, it symbolized the dangers of living on the prairies at that time. Kansas justly earned the unhappy name of "Bleeding Kansas" before and during the Civil War.

William Quantrill, a Confederate guerrilla fighter during the Civil War, directed a violent attack on the town of Olathe, Kansas, on the night of September 6-7, 1862. Six men were killed during the looting of the defenseless town: three civilians and three newly-recruited soldiers.
