6369 | I3143 | Craig | Owen Benton | 27 Apr 1853 | 19 Jan 1937 | 0 | Biography sketch on Owen Brenton Craig and wife Ada Dora (Drollinger) Owen Brenton Craig was born April 27, 1859 south of Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana. He was born to Larkin Craig and Elizabeth (Rayborn). His mother died three months after his birth of consumption. After his mothers death he moved to his aunts. Mrs. Lidia (John) Lightle outside of Veedersburg, Fountain County, Indiana. He lived there till he was old enough to work. Then his father came and took him to White County to work for him. He ran away from his father back to Fountain County. Owen talked very little about Larkin, but spoke often of his step mother who he evidently liked. Owen and Ada Dora Drollinger got married June 2, 1886 at Steam Corner, Millcreek Township, Fountain County, Indiana. They lived on the main road west of Wallace near a road side spring. It was in this area Samuel Larkin Craig Sr. was born. Owen was a farm hand in early life and worked for the railroad in later life. He worked on the railroad on the secton crew and was a gandydancer. He worked on Nickel Plate and Big Four and the one that ran from Veedersburg to Mellott. Another thing Owen did as a gandydancer on the railroad was laying rails and driving spikes. Owen gave Ada for their first Christmas a family picture album on December 25, 1886. Robert Craig of Veedersburg now has it. Owen and Ada resided in Veedersburg on North College Street running north of the baseball diamond at the city park. They moved in the last house on the west side of the street. They moved from Wallace to Veedersburg in 1910. Owen lived with his children after Ada died. Most people called him OB. By Charles Wesley Craig's children he was called Uncle Brent. Owen use to smoke a pipe. Robert remembers what his dad (Bill) said about Owen use to "Smoke matches" is what the kids called it. When he had a dab of tobacco left in his pipe then he'd light it to finish it off. According to what Robert 's dad told him Owen use to sing silly songs when Bill was little. Owen could play harmonica, juice harp, and french harp. Ada liked to quilt. She always had a smile and liked to laugh. Ada had dark brown hair. Owen had a mustache and was about 5'6" tall until he got older. He also had dark colored hair. He was born in Veedersburg on Sept. 10, 1922, to Samuel L. and Beulah Kiger Craig Sr. MILITARY RECORD - Entered service December 15, 1942 Fort Benjamin Harrison Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana Discharged November 1945 Camp Atterbury, Columbus, Bartholomew County, IN. Branch of service: Army Engineering Overseas Service: European Theatre of Operations 1944-1945 Was in the Battle of the Bulge. Samuel's rank was T-5 Technican. During the war (World War II) Sam was in the Engineer Topographical Company below is the story about them and what they did: 8 655 Engineer Topographical Company . This is our story. To those of us who traced the course of action from the shores of Normandy to the end of the war, it recalls a story of intense, ceaseless action and drama that no pictorical map can adequately illustrate. The places and events over which it passes lightly were our life, exciting and unpredicted, from the breakthrough at St. Lo. through endless days and nights of keeping the mapping ahead of the front lines in the continous action to the linkup with the Russian Armies in Germany. Here is none of the tragedy or the cheers, the heartbreak or the humor, the discomfort or the fune, but these were as much an integral part of the story as they are a part of our memories. The hedgerow hopping through the Cherbourg and Brittany peninsula to Brest was to the accompaniement of enthusastic cheers by French and we cannot overlook Bed Check Charlie of the Luftwaffe. The native drink of Calvados shall always be remembered as well as our attempt to conversation with the wildly enthusiastic French. The mad dash across France to pick up the war again at Bastogne catching a fleeting glimpse of Paris enroute. The long days in Belguim, mixed with apprehension and pleasure in the uncertain future. The wonderful friends we found there will always be remembered. The snow, rain, cold, sleet, and mud made progress difficult against a solid wall of resistance. The German Counter Offense in the Ardennes gave us bombs and steel for Christmas and the New Year. We probed slowly back into Germany until the action forwarded by leaps and bounds into the town of the Moselle and Rhine Valleys. We welcomed the bright warm sunshine and the blessed relief of spring. The four land highways the autobahns, wre springboards for the armor and enabled great thrusts into the heart of Germany. We saw the shocking realities of the concentration camps. White flags of surrender flying from the houses and long lines of liberated allied prisoners, streaming down both sides of the highways told us that the end was near. The news the world waited for come to us on May 7, 1945 and it is fitting to quote, in part, the G-2 report for that day ...... for the first time in eleven months there is no contact with the enemy. The victory which was won on Omaha and Utah Beaches has reached its climax. Today belongs to the men of this army who fought and conquered the enemy situation to report for there is no longer an enemy to defeat.............
