9316 I5924  Drollinger  Emma Lovina  22 Apr 1914  21 Sep 2006  Emma D. Dennis 1914 ~ 2006 SALINA, UT - Emma Lovina Drollinger Dennis of Salina, died 21 September 2006 in Glenwood, Utah. She was born 92 years ago, 22 April 1914 in Bear River City, Box Elder County, Utah. She was the third of 13 children born to Allen Elmer and Nancy Elizabeth Stone Drollinger. During her formative years, she lived in Ioka in the Uintah Basin and graduated from Roosevelt High School when she was 18 years old. On 10 May 1935 she married DeVere Thomas Dennis. Their mothers accompanied them to the bishop's home in Uncle Willard's 1932 Star pickup truck. When they arrived (unannounced), they had to wait while the bishop's wife called him in from the farm. Then, after changing into his suit, he performed the ceremony in the front room. Emma and DeVere were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple 13 April 1954, when she was expecting their third child. An excellent homemaker and seamstress, Emma enjoyed crocheting, quilting and interior decorating. During World War II the happy couple moved with their two little sons to Portland, Oregon. They both worked in the shipyards -she was a three-plate welder and bears a dime-sized scar on her foot from a piece of hot slag that fell into her boot. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and happy to serve in numerous capacities over the years, including Primary teacher, Sunday School teacher, Young Women advisor, and twice as Relief Society president. Emma is survived by her husband of 71 years, and their three children, Alan and Hope Dennis of Victoria, TX, Ronald and Grace Marie Dennis of Provo, Rochelle and Paul Erickson of Salina. She is also survived by her sisters, Ardy Strong of Salt Lake City, Velma Dart of Roosevelt, Pearl and Ken Workman of Centerville; and brothers, Cliff and Gladys Drollinger of Roosevelt, Dee and Gwen Drollinger, Don and Verna Drollinger, all of Salt Lake City. She was preceded in death by both parents, and she is no doubt having a great family reunion with them and her sisters, Erma and Rowene Drollinger, Helen Beilfuss; and her brothers, Grant, Glen, and Fred Drollinger. Emma and DeVere are loved by 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren;and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 27, 2006, 12 noon in the Salina 2nd LDS Ward Chapel, 87 South 100 East in Salina. Friends may call for viewing at the Springer Turner Funeral Home in Salina, Tuesday evening 6-8 p.m. or Wednesday morning 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the services. Burial will be in the Salina Pioneer Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah. 9321 I13532  Drollinger  Enos  25 Nov 1825  29 Nov 1917  Enos was married three times and Elizabeth was his third wife per great grandson, Guy L. Drollinger. Further, they lived in the Tipton, IA area. Guy is positive that Enos' father's name is "Henry Drollinger" - he just isn't sure yet which Henry Drollinger. (26 Dec 2007)

Enos and Elizabeth moved from Pennsylvania to Cedar County, Iowa in the late 1800's. They are found in the 1870 census records in Fairfield Township, Cedar County. The family later moved to Shannon City in Union County, where Enos is found in the census for 1880 living with his second wife, Caroline. On Main Street in Shannon City was the Enos Drollinger Hotel - Rooms Upstairs. It had a large dining room where meals were served, and in front was a room they called the bar room. There was no bar in it, just a big wood trough to wash up in! The water ran through the floor into a ditch below.

9324 I2935  Drollinger  Erastus Manford  6 Jun 1853  2 Oct 1913  Dr. Erastus M. Drollinger, pioneer physician of South Bend died yesterday. The deceased was a native of this county and burial will be Sunday at Mill Creek, the old family home.

Erastus attended the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical Institute, graduating in 1878, the same year he wed Mary Alice Jarrell. He quickly established his practice in South Bend, Indiana, where he practiced for 34 years. In an article in The Archives of Surgery, a peer-reviewed journal, Dr. Ira M. Rutkow describes eclectics as those "who used only botanical preparations in the treatment of disease and for preoperative and postoperative care." Dr. Rutkow's article is a brief biography of Andrew Jackson Howe, who he calls "the leading eclectic surgeon of his time." Erastus and his brother Schuyler, also a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Eclectic Medicine and Surgery, studied under Dr. Howe, the college's surgery chair 1858-1892. Dr. Rutkow writes that eclecticism "had its origins in mostly rural areas populated by the lower class," and that "most eclectic physicians were poorly trained."
Nonetheless, the Cincinnati College was probably the best place to become an eclectic physician. Bemoaning the training and education of physicians in America, the American Medical Association and Carnegie Foundation sponsored a two year investigative study of medical education. The resulting 1910 report of Dr. Abraham Flexner doomed many an educational institution, but Cincinnati's survived as the only one turning out eclectic physicians. The college did not flourish, however. A lack of research, the rise in allopathic medicine, and problems of accreditation dogged Cincinnati College. With enrollment and applications down the college graduated no one between 1929 and 1933. The Great Depression contributed to the general morbidity and in spite of a reorganization, the school closed forever in 1939.
Typical of the times, Erastus's office and his home were one in the same. Directories list him at 106 Michigan throughout his life. Besides being a physician, Erastus was the South Bend coroner for at least one year about the time of his mother's death. Although Erastus's office and residence are listed in a 1905 directory of South Bend, he is not in the physicians' list, nor is any occupation listed for him. He may have had a gap in his career, but this is more likely a directory error.

Mary Elizabeth had penned a codicil to her will in 1890 giving Erastus's willed portion to his wife, her "beloved daughter-in-law, Mary Alice." Presumably Erastus at least helped take care of his mother in spite of their falling out because her estate paid a bill for his services. But another doctor also billed the estate, so one wonders if Mary Elizabeth had earlier disagreed with Erastus's care of her. Her will was so eccentric that the onset of some senility must also be considered.
Erastus's last directory listing was in 1912 when he was both a physician and surgeon. Also living with Erastus and Mary Alice in 1912 was daughter Mabel, a teacher. Erastus died 2 October 1913 in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. Mary Alice probably died in 1924. in South Bend. She appears in the South Bend directories in 1916 (widow with daughter), 1920 (with daughter), and 1923 (without her daughter), but is not in any directory thereafter. No records of marriage or death have been found for Mabel and no record of death for Mary Alice, but they likely died soon after their last directory appearances. No cemetery records have been found for the family. They are not buried in the Sauktown Cemetery where many in Erastus's extended family rest. Mary Alice may have buried him wherever her family is or some place in South Bend yet undiscovered.

South Bend Tribune Obituary
Saturday December 5, 1891
Found Dead in Bed
Sudden Death of Mrs. John M. Zeitler, of Clay Township
From the Daily Tribune of Thursday
Mr. John M. Zeitler, a well known farmer in Clay township, awakened this
morning and hearing their two-months-old babe crying, spoke to his wife.
Receiving no answer he touched her and was horrified to find her dead. He
aroused his children and one of the girls ran to the next neighbor, Mr. John P.
Pierce, for assistance. The members of the family as well as the neighbors
were greatly overcome by her sudden death. The night before she was at work as
usual, and said she had not felt well in years. She had arranged to go Mr.
Phillip Strickler's (a neighbor's), to-day along with other neighbors to a
butchering bee. She had been troubled with heart failure, and (CORONER DROLLINGER) Coroner Drollinger (CORONER, DROLLINGER) , who reviewed the remains this forenoon decided that was the cause of her death.
Mrs. Zeitler was a daughter of Mrs. and the late Joshua Johnson and brother of
ex-Trustee John Q. Johnson, of Clay township. Her grand-father's family was
one of the first whole families to settle in South Bend. Sarah, or "Sadie' as
she was familiarily (sic) known, was about 52 years old and leaves six
children, all girls, the oldest about twenty and the youngest but two months.
Although a delicate looking lady, Mrs. Zietler (sic) had a great deal of
vitality, loved her home, husband and children and was an adorable wife and
mother. He loss will not only be greatly felt by her family, her aged mother,
brothers and sisters, but by the neighbors among whom she had lived all her
life.
The funeral will take place from the Ullery church one mile north of the city,
near her home, on Saturday forenoon at ten o'clock.

Subject: My sister, Karen
Dear Lenova;
I suppose I have been in denial the last couple of days. My baby sister, Karen has died late Friday evening. She has had a terrible bout with her alergies. She couldn't breathe well and asked her Husband Oscar to take her outside so she might breathe easier. He did and Karen said she felt better, but she was very thirsty. He brought her some water and she could not swallow it. She gurgled out for him to dial 911. She went into shock. The EMT's worked on her for 45 minutes and finely pronounced her dead. Poor always calm Oscar could not control his rush of emotions. Robert Lyle came down and spent some time with him.
It is so sad when we lose a close relative. This whole family is in shock. All of us who knew Karen and Oscar have always leaned on their love and strength to help guide us through our hardships and even our not so hard ships. They are truly one as God has described a marriage of a man and a woman. Both Karen and Oscar have met those requirements for the fulfillment of a Blessed Marriage by God. They both have diligently worked alone and together, in their kind and wonderful way, to glorify their marrage commitments. They have treated all of us love with unsurpassed generosity to all their family members and friends in such a loving and wonderful way. We all asked Karen and Oscar for as little as advice to as much as they might be able to spare. They became the Rock for all family members and their friends to count on for love and kiindness. What a magnificant Blessing to know either or both of them, and have them as my "little sister and little brother." They are both giants and I love them so very much. I cannot love them as much as I have felt loved. I am a weak character. I will tell you, I love both of them as much as I am capable of loving. I ask our Most Loving and Wonderful God Who is LOVE, to consider her and her husband kindly and generously for The Kingdom. Please forgive all of our transgressions, Dear Lord. I ask this in Your Most Holy Name, Jesus Christ. Amen.

E. Karen Drollinger Ayon
For two of us she was mother
Some of us called her "Mom"
For one of us she was something other
Wife, lover, companion even perhaps "the bomb!"

As a sister and cousin, she was excitement
Fun to have around
Full of silly antics
Playful as a clown

To so many of us she was Aunt Karen
The center of attention she made us feel
It seems from everything we did or said
Her interest and excitement could not hide her zeal

"Oh that sounds exciting!"
She would often say
As she seemed to vicariously live her life
Through each of us day by day

She saw the good in all of us
So optimistic from the git
Even to the point of being nerving
She'd declare "OJ they must acquit!"

With passion she would live her life
Always trying to have a ball
Interacting with anyone who would
Come to visit or give her a simple call

If for various reasons
She could not move about
She'd watch her little TV
For the chance to debate or even shout

As to the E within her name
It might come as a surpriser
Erma. Ethel or Ester
I always thought it was "Energizer"

For growing up around her
One would realize
Her energy often belied her
Regardless of her size

From all the bumps and bruises
Even broken bones
She would sympathize with you
With her caring tones

She seemed to adopt every little kid
From 230 Pancho Villa to her vision limit
Their house was always buzzing
With every little kid and their kismet

Of joining Aunt Karen's ranks
Of her little fans
As the lady just down the street
Who puts goodies in their hands

And now her time has come
And this her legacy
That every heart that she touched
Will miss her "Normalcy"
